Kruse, Walny Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
December 10, 2018 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Brandon Kruse and track and field distance runner Rachel Walny.
Male Athlete of the Week
Brandon Kruse, a sophomore from Saline, Mich., continued his strong season this past weekend in Bowling Green's tie/shootout victory and win over the Ferris State Bulldogs. Kruse contributed to the first two of BGSU's three goals on Friday (Dec. 7) night picking up an assist on Max Johnson's goal, and scoring on a power play both in the second period. He also had eight shots on goal Friday night. 'Kruser' would keep pace on Saturday (Dec. 8) night finding Max Johnson 21 seconds into the second period to give Bowling Green their first lead of the night. He would go on to score the game tying goal in the third period to ultimately send the game into overtime where the Falcons would come out on top.
Female Athlete of the Week
Rachel Walny, a redshirt senior from Clinton Township, Mich., broke a school record that had stood for 32 years Friday at the GVSU Holiday Open. Walny ran the 5000m in 16:26.14 to break the school record by more than 14 seconds. Walny, who entered the weekend with three of the four fastest times in school history in the event, broke her own personal best time by more than 20 seconds. An All-American in the 10,000 in outdoor, Walny now holds four school records between indoor and outdoor track and field, as well as cross country.
