McLain Announced as Senior CLASS Award Finalist
February 16, 2018 | Ice Hockey
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas – The Bowling Green hockey program's senior captain Mitch McLain has been announced as a top-10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. A WCHA Scholar-Athlete, McLain excels in the four notable areas for the award: Community, Classroom, Character and Competition. Fans can vote daily now through March 26 by clicking HERE.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A native of Baxter, Minn., McLain was named First Team All-WCHA in the 2016-17 season after earning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions, in addition to being named WCHA Player of the Month for both November and December. The forward currently leads the Bowling Green squad with 14 goals in the 2017-18 campaign, as well as 11 assists for 25 points on the year. McLain has tallied 14 points in the last 12 games, while in his career he amasses 94 points by 49 goals and 45 assists through 153 games played.
A Mild-to-Moderate Intervention Specialist major, McLain holds a 3.515 GPA entering his final semester at BGSU and continues to be involved in his community though volunteering at Wood Lane School. In addition to being a SAAC representative on campus, McLain connects with his special education students at Wood Lane School to coordinate an annual field trip in which they visit the Ice Arena to meet the Bowling Green hockey team and experience activities on the ice. In addition to his time at Wood Lane, McLain also works with the Crim Elementary Reading Tutor Program and its first grade students.
McLain is one of just two candidates to represent the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the award, joining Bemidji State's Michael Bitzer.
The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of candidates announced in the fall. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 26. Fan balloting counts for 1/3 of the total with the remaining 2/3 determined by NCAA Division I coaches and national media members, while the Senior CLASS Award recipients will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Frozen Four®.
