February 28, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program has swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards as junior Paula Comella was announced as MAC Singles Player of the Week, while Comella and sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash were honored as MAC Doubles Team of the Week.
A native of Ciutadella, de Menorca, Spain, Comella earned four wins on the weekend when she picked up two singles and two doubles victories against both Notre Dame and Detroit. Comella first downed her opponent at Notre Dame in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, earning the lone singles point for the Falcons on the day. Comella then extended her singles win streak to five straight matches when she defeated Detroit 6-2, 6-3 for another point for the Falcons in the eventual shutout of the Titans. Comella leads the Falcons with an 8-1 record on the season at No. 1 singles.
When Comella teamed up with Tavpash for doubles competition, the pairing picked up two wins at No. 1 doubles when it downed both of its opponents at Notre Dame and Detroit. The duo first earned a 6-3 win at the No. 1 slot against the Fighting Irish, earning the lone doubles victory for the Falcons on the day. The pairing continued its hot streak at Detroit when it earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, to begin a two-match win streak. Comella/Tavpash helped the Falcons earn the doubles point and shutout of Detroit, and now improve to a 6-3 record on the season at the top of doubles competition.
It marks Comella's first MAC Singles Player of the Week award in her career, as well as fourth MAC Doubles Team of the Week honor. For Tavpash, it is her third MAC Doubles Team of the Week recognition in her career, and first for the 2018 campaign.
