Men's Cross Country Concludes Successful Indoor Season
March 01, 2018 | Men's Cross Country
Nine of Bowling Green State University's men's cross country team participated in indoor track and field events during the 2018 winter season as they prepare for the 2018 cross country season. Of the nine, five posted lifetime personal records, making for a "solid successful indoor track season," according to Coach Juan Carrillo.
Perhaps the most impressive performance came in the 5K where Noah Schaub finished in 14:15, only seven seconds shy of tying Sid Sink for the Falcons' indoor 5K record.
"I don't think it's a matter of whether or not he breaks these records," Carrillo said. "It's a matter of when. For now, that will have to wait for next indoor season."
In the same performance, Schaub recorded the second fastest 5K in the MAC Indoor Performance list, coming in only four seconds behind Eastern Michigan's Hlynur Andresson. Schaub also recorded a new personal best in the 3K (8:23).
Four other runners joined Schaub in tallying personal records. Paul and Gabe Garbarino were both able to improve, with each recording two new personal records. Paul Garbarino reduced his time in the mile (4:21) and in the 5K (15:09). Meanwhile, Gabe Garbarino also was able to improve in the 5K (15:36) and additionally the 3K (9:02). In the same two events, Jonathan Voth came away with new personal records as well (5K 15:19, 3K 8:49). To round out the list of new personal records, Kyle Hibinger was able to shave off 11 seconds from his mile time (4:24).
The indoor and outdoor track and field seasons are a pivotal part of the cross country team's preparations for the fall. Despite participating in track events, the goal remains to prepare the team for cross country.
"The main goal I had for the guys was to improve their track times and continue training the aerobic component that will set them up for a good cross country season," Carrillo said. "So everything we are doing now is with the goal in mind to make us a better team for the cross country season."
With a full outdoor season ahead, the cross country team will attempt to carry the momentum of the indoor season with them and continue their groundwork for the fall.
