Derrick Vicars Named Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach Of The Year
March 05, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
New Orleans – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today that Bowling Green State University throws coach Derrick Vicars has been named the Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
The USTFCCCA announced regional athletes and coaches of the year Monday for each of the nine regions. Awards winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
"The Bowling Green throws group is one of the strongest in the country," BGSU Track & Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "This award is a testament to Derrick's hard work and development of that group. The women have wholeheartedly bought into his philosophy and achieved at an impressive level."
In just his second year at Bowling Green, Vicars' throws unit has become one of the dominant programs in the country. In the USTFCCCA event squad rankings, BGSU's weight throwers are second in the nation and shot putters are third. BGSU scored 34 of its 68 points at the MAC Championships in the two throws events, earning a shot put conference championship, two second-place results, and a fourth-place finish. Aliyah Gustafson will head to the national championships as the No. 8 seed in the shot put. She is the first Falcon to qualify for the indoor national championships since 2001.
