The Bowling Green State University women's soccer program, one of the most improved teams in the nation in 2017, has announced the 2018 schedule. Head coach Matt Fannon and the Falcons will play 19 regular-season matches, including 10 contests inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Stadium.

The Falcons' schedule also includes a trip to Hawai'i for a pair of matches to open the season, as well as a handful of matches against opponents from around the Midwest.
"Obviously the standout fixtures are the games in Hawai'i," said Fannon, entering his second season at the BG helm. "I know everyone is incredibly excited for these games. However, we have made it clear to the players that we are not going there for a holiday; we plan to compete to win in both matches.
"We wanted to ensure that we got a minimum of two exhibition games in the schedule. Because of the Hawai'i trip, we are allowed one extra game, so we were able to keep our two in early August. We also wanted to ensure we played some top regional teams in the non-conference section of the season, and we feel good about the standard of matches we will get to play to prepare us for the MAC."
The home slate includes non-conference matchups with Oakland, Xavier, DePaul and Youngstown State, and the six Mid-American Conference matches at Cochrane are highlighted by a a rematch of the 2017 MAC Tournament Championship as Toledo ventures down I-75 to close the regular season.
The road portion of the schedule includes that season-opening trip to Hawai'i to play Loyola Marymount and the Rainbow Wahine, as well as non-league meetings with Valparaiso and Northwestern.
The Hawai'i trip sees the Falcons face LMU on Aug. 17 before meeting host UH two days later. The home opener is set for Saturday, Aug. 25, against Oakland. Last season, the Brown and Orange opened the campaign with a 5-1 road win over the Golden Grizzlies.
A trip to Valparaiso ends the month of August (Aug. 31), and BG begins September and closes the non-league slate with three of four matches at Cochrane. BG hosts Xavier, meeting the Musketeers for the first time since 2010, on Sept. 6, and the Falcons then head to Evanston, Ill., for a Sept 9 meeting with Northwestern. The Wildcats won 12 matches last year, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships before falling by a goal to the eventual national runner-up.
DePaul (Sept. 13) and Youngstown State (Sept. 16) come to Cochrane as a two-match homestand closes the non-league schedule. DePaul is one of three first-time opponents for the Falcons, joining Loyola Marymount and Northwestern, while BGSU is a perfect 6-0-0 against YSU, but the teams have not met in seven years.
The MAC schedule begins with a road swing against Miami (Sept. 21) and Ball State (Sept. 23), before the Falcons host Northern Illinois (Sept. 28) and Western Michigan (Sept. 30) the following weekend.Â
The month of October begins with a trip to Central Michigan (Oct. 4) before the Falcons begin a season-long three-match homestand. Eastern Michigan (Oct. 7), Kent State (Oct. 12) and Ohio (Oct. 14) come to town during that eight-day span. KSU captured the MAC regular-season title in 2017, but the Falcons picked up road wins over the Golden Flashes both in the regular season and in the league tourney's semifinal round.
BG closes the road portion of the regular-season slate with matches against Akron (Oct. 18) and Buffalo (Oct. 21). BG topped the Zips, 2-0, a year ago, and the Falcons posted two come-from-behind wins over the Bulls at Cochrane Stadium. The latter victory came in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
Toledo comes to Cochrane on Oct. 25, as the Falcons and Rockets meet in the regular-season finale' for the third consecutive year.
The MAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal-round matches on Oct. 28, with the four survivors heading to the site of the regular-season champion for the semifinals (Nov. 2) and championship match (Nov. 4).
Prior to the start of the regular season, the Falcons will play a pair of scrimmages, hosting Detroit (Aug. 8) before heading to Wright State (Aug. 12).
BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1 and a MAC ledger of 6-4-1. The Falcons' total of 13 victories was the second-highest in school history, while BG's six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008. BGSU qualified for the MAC Tournament for the first time since that '08 campaign, and the Falcons advanced to the league tourney's championship match for the first time since 2007. Fannon and his staff had four seniors on the '17 roster.
"We are hoping to take a step forward from our 2017 season, and we have lofty goals for this fall," said Fannon. "But, the only way we can achieve them is to take each game at a time and right now our sole focus is preparing for our first game."
