Men's Cross Country Completes Successful Spring Outdoor Campaign
May 09, 2018 | Men's Cross Country
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team recently completed a successful spring outdoor season, earning seven lifetime personal bests at the Gina Relays April 26.
Sophmore Ray Berling improved his 5k time to 15:17 which is a personal record of 33 seconds, while freshman Gabe Garbarino ended up with personal record of 15:26. Senior Jacob Schenten added a personal record of 15:14, while junior Jonathan Wenning ran a personal record of 15:08. Sophmore Jonathan Voth crushed his previous 5k time of 16:05 by almost a full minute to a personal record of 15:08 and freshman Kyle Hibinger ran an impressive 15:14 5k for his first 5k of his life. Hibinger also ran an impressive 3:59 1500m, equivalent to a 4:16 mile, 21 seconds faster than his best high school mile time.
Junior Noah Schaub competed in just two races this outdoor season due to an injury that put him out of training for three weeks in late February to March. Despite that, he ended up running a personal record of 3:56 in the 1500m and also ran his second fastest 5k time of 14:35 in his career.
"We had a lot of personal records and great performances this outdoor season," Assistant Cross Country Coach Juan Carrillo, who oversees the day-to-day activities of the men's program, said. "It is hard to name one performance that stood out above the others."
The members of the team will resume their summer training program to prepare for the 2018 cross country season.
"Our main goal was to improve their track times and they exceeded my expectations," Carrillo said. "I'm most impressed by their ability to improve so much in such a short season. We ended the track season on a high note with a lot of excitement and momentum, and we are definitely looking forward to the cross country season."
While a third-place finish at the 2017 MAC Cross Country Championships was the team's best result since 1995, the BGSU men's cross country program has the foundation in place to take another step forward in 2018. The team has shown success both on and off the course, ranking tied for fourth nationally with a 3.60 team grade point average.
