BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program released its entire 2018-19 schedule on Wednesday (Aug. 1) afternoon, head coach Michael Huger announced. The Falcons will play 16 games inside of the Stroh Center, including seven non-conference home games.
"As the 2018-19 season approaches, we are excited to announce our full non-conference and conference schedule. In a year where we return the core of our team, and add some talented newcomers, we wanted to challenge ourselves early on against quality opponents," said Huger. "My staff, players and I are looking forward to early season battles against two potential Top 25 teams in St. John's and VCU, and then returning back to the Stroh Center to take on a 2018 NCAA Tournament team in North Carolina Central. We will continue to prepare for MAC play with road games against a 2018 NIT team in Hampton, and a team that returns the majority of its roster in Hartford. As we get closer to the start of MAC play, games against CAA and Horizon League teams will certainly bring a MAC-level intensity."
With the college basketball season now starting on a Tuesday as opposed to a Friday, the Orange and Brown will open the 2018-19 season with a Nov. 6 game versus Tiffin at the Stroh Center. By scheduling a Non-DI opponent, BGSU unlocks the ability to max out its schedule. With no Non-DI game and no four-game multiple team event, the NCAA only permits schools to play 30 games.
After the season opener, the Falcons will prepare for the Legends Classic. The full schedule for the Legends Classic was announced in mid-June. As part of the event, BGSU will play road games against St. John's (Nov. 9) and Virginia Commonwealth (Nov. 12). Last season, St. John's picked up wins over No. 4 Duke and No. 1 Villanova, while VCU went 18-15 before losing to the Atlantic 10 regular-season champions in Rhode Island at the conference tournament.
The Falcons take on North Carolina Central on Nov. 15 at the Stroh Center. N.C. Central won the MEAC Tournament last year before falling to Texas Southern in the NCAA Tournament.
BGSU will then play the regular-season champs in the MEAC, as the Falcons are scheduled to play Hampton in the Legends Classic Detroit Subregional on Nov. 19. Hampton went 19-16 in 2017-18, and lost to Notre Dame in the NIT. The Falcons will conclude the Legends Classic on Nov. 20 by playing either Loyola Maryland or Detroit Mercy. Both games of the Detroit Subregional will be played at Calihan Hall in Detroit.
Bowling Green will conclude the month of November with a return game against Drexel in Bowling Green on Nov. 25. Last season, Justin Turner scored 33 points to lead the Falcons to an opening-night win over Drexel in Philadelphia. The Orange and Brown then open December with back-to-back road games against Hartford (Dec. 1) and Cleveland State (Dec. 5).
Four-consecutive home games will round out Bowling Green's non-conference slate. The Falcons are scheduled to host Green Bay (Dec. 8), Findlay (Dec. 16), Western Carolina (Dec. 21) and Tennessee Martin (Dec. 30). Last season, the Falcons defeated the Phoenix in Green Bay in overtime.
As an additional non-conference scheduling note, the exact date / opponent for the Bill Frack Challenge is being finalized. Stay tuned to BGSUFalcons.com and the men's basketball Twitter account at @BGSUMHoops for the official announcement.
Transitioning into the league portion of the schedule, BGSU is yet again scheduled to play 18 conference games. "Our MAC schedule this season will bring a slightly different feel as we open up the season on the road at Kent State," commented Huger. "As always, the MAC slate will be challenging, competitive and exciting. Year in and year out, the MAC proves to be one of the best mid-major leagues in the country, and this year, it seems as though every team in the league will be better than last season. Our fans will be excited for the Battle Of I-75 to return to the Stroh Center in 2018-19."
Bowling Green will play nine games at the Stroh Center during the conference season. The Falcons will host every East Division school – Akron, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami and Ohio – as well as Ball State, Central Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan. On the road, BGSU will face the five East Division institutions, along with Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
The Falcons are set to stage the Battle Of I-75 at the Stroh Center on Saturday, Feb. 9. The contest will mark the only scheduled meeting between Bowling Green and Toledo this season. Additionally, Bowling Green has a bye date scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 29.
The Falcons have improved their East-Division finish each year of the Michael Huger era. Bowling Green went 16-16 in 2017-18 to finish in fourth place within the division. Bowling Green returns four starters heading into the 2018-19 season.
