Senior scores a pair of first-half goals in Saturday's victory
Senior Tate Robertson scored a pair of first-half goals as the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team downed Valparaiso University, 2-1, Saturday evening (Sept. 29). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
Robertson's two goals came just over seven minutes apart. He converted a cross from sophomore Vinny Worner at the 9:43 mark to put the Falcons ahead for good, then doubled the lead with a shot from the top of the 18 with 17:04 elapsed.
Lucca Lacerda's perfectly-placed free kick cut the BG advantage to a single goal with 10 minutes left in the half, but junior goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia and the Falcons would not let the Crusaders get the equalizer.
Each team fired 12 shots on the night, and the Falcons had a narrow 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Mwembia made five saves en route to the win, while Valpo 'keeper Nacho Miras had six stops on the night.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 6' | After a BG header into the penalty area, a Valpo defender attempted to head the ball away from goal. But, the ball fell to junior Chris Brennan, who hit a volley from the 18. The hard, dipping shot sailed just over the crossbar.
• 10' | GOAL | Brennan got his head on a goal kick by classmate Anthony Mwembia, nodding the ball to sophomore Vinny Worner on the right side of the pitch. Worner took several touches and played a low cross into the box, where senior Tate Robertson was waiting. The ball found Robertson on the left side of the area, and he put his shot back across the six-yard box and into the far corner of the net. Worner and Brennan earned assists on the play.
• 13' | Worner played another cross from the right side, and senior Peter Pugliese hit a one-timer in the box, but his shot went over the goal.
• 15' | Junior Tom Wrobel played a long ball over the top to Robertson, who made several impressive plays, settling the ball out of the air, then turning and firing a laser from the right side of the box. VU goalkeeper Nacho Miras, however, parried the hard shot, then grabbed the ball after it bounced.
• 18' | GOAL | Robertson and the Falcons doubled the lead. Sophomore Chris Sullivan brought the ball down the left side and centered it to Robertson. The senior brought the ball from right to left and, just outside the circle at the top of the 18, fired a shot back toward the left side of the net. Miras got a glove on the ball, but could not keep it from crossing the line and hitting the netting.
• 27' | VU's Lucca Lacerda hit a hard turnaround shot, but Mwembia tipped the ball with a diving effort, then got to the ball well before any other players could reach it.
• 36' | GOAL | After a foul on the Falcons just outside the box, Lacerda took the ensuing free kick and hit a perfect shot. His ball curved around the BG wall and went just inside the right goalpost to cut BG's lead in half.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 52' | The Crusaders pressured for the tying goal, and Lacerda hit a hard turnaround shot that was ticketed for the lower-right-hand corner of the net. But, Mwembia made a diving save.
• 56' | Brennan was knocked to the ground as he approached the six-yard line on the left side of the box. The junior somehow still got a shot off, but Miras grabbed the ball out of the air.
• 59' | Robertson hit a diagonal ball into the box, but Miras was able to leap and grab it just before Brennan arrived.
• 63' | The Falcons strung together numerous passes, and Wrobel served it into the box. Robertson headed it across toward Brennan, but a VU defender got his noggin on it before the BG junior could get there. The ball continued across the box to Sullivan, who faked a shot, took a touch, then hit a hard shot toward goal. Somehow, though, Miras made a point-blank save to keep his team's deficit at a single goal.
• 68' | Midway throrugh the half, Sullivan cut the ball back near the end line and played it in to Brennan from the right side. Brennan's dangerous-looking shot was deflected out of play, and Miras grabbed the ensuing corner kick.
• 82' | The Crusaders applied the pressure as time ticked away in the second half. A cross from Michael Marchionna found Jordan James in the center of the box, but his one-timer sailed high.
• 87' | With the visitors pushing forward, Robertson stole the ball near midfield and the Falcons looked to counter. Robertson found Sullivan, who quickly sent a ball in Brennan's direction, but the play was whistled dead due to an offside call.
• 88' | Mwembia came up big with two and a half minutes remaining, tipping a cross/shot by Julien Bertho over the bar. The visitors had several corner kicks and provided several nervous moments for the Falcon faithful during the last 150 seconds, but BG would not allow another shot attempt before time expired.
