UP NEXT IN FALCON SOCCER
• The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, coming off of a home win, opens the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule at Cochrane Stadium this weekend. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons face the University of Akron on Saturday evening (Oct. 6), with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Admission is free to all home regular-season BGSU soccer matches.
• The UA game is the first of five MAC matchups in as many weekends. Four of those conference contests will take place on a Saturday, with three of those Saturday games at home.
• Following the Akron game, the Falcons will hit the road for the next two matches, beginning with a Tuesday (Oct. 9) contest vs. IUPUI. That matchup is also set for a 7:00 p.m. start, at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.
• All but one of the Falcons' matches this season, including every remaining contest, is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time.
TWO FOR TATE
• Senior Tate Robertson scored two goals just over seven minutes apart to lift the Falcons to a 2-1 win over Valparaiso Saturday night (Sept. 29) at Cochrane Stadium. It was the first two-goal match of Robertson's career.
• For his efforts, Robertson was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday morning (Oct. 1). Then, 24 hours later, he was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, earning that honor for the third time in his BGSU career.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• BGSU enters the Akron match with a record of 2-5-2 on the season. The Falcons, as mentioned, are coming off of a 2-1 win over Valparaiso at Cochrane Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 29).
• The Falcons are 1-2-1 at home and 1-3-1 on the road. BGSU has scored 10 goals and allowed 16 this season to date.
• The Falcons have scored two goals in each of the last two contests, the win over Valpo and a 3-2 overtime loss at Purdue Fort Wayne (a team ranked eighth in the country in RPI at that time).
• BG began the season with a pair of one-goal losses to Northern Kentucky (3-2)and Penn State (1-0), and BG then battled Wright State to a scoreless draw (Aug. 31) before picking up a 3-2 win at Western Illinois two days later (Sept. 2).
• The Wright State match was the only blemish on the Raiders' record until Tuesday (Oct. 2). WSU is ranked No. 11 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll and No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, and the Raiders' first loss of the season came at No. 6 Virginia, 2-1, Tuesday night. WSU, 8-1-1 on the year, was shut out by the BG defense, but is averaging 3.11 goals per match in the other nine contests.
• No. 3 Michigan State broke open a close match with two goals in the last 10 minutes to down the Falcons, 3-0, at Cochrane (Sept. 7). Then, BG battled Ohio State to a 1-1, double-OT draw in Columbus (Sept. 11). The Falcons outshot the Buckeyes, 16-5, after halftime, and BG tied the match on sophomore Zach Buescher's goal with just nine seconds to go.
• The Falcons' match at Wofford, scheduled for Sept. 15, was scuttled due to Hurricane Florence and the weather forecast in the Carolinas. BG then lost at Cleveland State before falling at PFW on an overtime penalty kick.
• Senior Tate Robertson leads the Falcons with nine points, including two goals and a team-leading five assists. He has had the primary assist on four BG goals.
• Fellow senior Ebenezer Ackon has four points on the year, and has two goals to tie Robertson for the team lead. Ackon's two goals came just 75 seconds apart in the NKU match.
• Senior Peter Pugliese and sophomores Chris Sullivan and Vinny Worner each have four points. Sullivan and Worner each have a goal and two assists, while all four of Pugliese's points have come on assists. Pugliese has had an assist on three of BG's last four goals.
• Buescher and junior Chris Brennan each have three points while senior Moe Mustafa, and freshman Jensen Lukacsko both have two.
• Junior Anthony Mwembia has played all nine matches in goal, and has 25 total saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of 1.69.
• Six different Falcons have started all nine games this fall. That list includes Buescher, Mwembia, Peter Pugliese, Robertson, Sullivan and Worner. A total of 13 different players have started at least five matches to date.
• Mwembia has been on the pitch for every second of every match so far, while Buescher has played 839 of the 851-plus minutes. Robertson (807) and Sullivan (804) each have played over 800 minutes this fall as well, with Worner (777) and Mustafa (771) close behind.
TWO GOALS (USUALLY) DOES THE TRICK
• Prior to this season, the Falcons had a record of 50-4-6 when scoring two goals in a match in the Eric Nichols Era. BGSU has lost twice this year when doing so, however, and the Falcons are 2-2-0 in such matches this season to date.
• The season opener vs. Northern Kentucky marked the first time BGSU had lost when scoring two or more goals in a match since an OT loss to Duquesne in 2014, and was the Falcons' first such loss in regulation since the Belmont match of 2011.
• BG found the back of the net three times en route to victory at WIU, but suffered a 3-2 setback in Fort Wayne. After bouncing back vs. Valparaiso, BGSU is now 52-6-6 when scoring two or more goals in the Nichols Era.
SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE BROWN AND ORANGE FOR YOUR BROADCAST, WEB STREAM, ARTICLE OR MYSPACE PAGE
• The 2018 season marks the 54th year of BGSU men's soccer. Legendary coach Mickey Cochrane initiated varsity programs in both soccer and lacrosse at BG in 1965, after serving as club coach of both sports at the University the previous year.
• Eric Nichols, now in his 10th season at BG, is just the fifth coach in the illustrious history of Falcon men's soccer. Cochrane (1965-77), Gary Palmisano (1978-92, 1994), Mel Mahler (1993, 1995-2003) and Fred Thompson (2004-08) are the only other individuals to have coached the BGSU men's soccer program.
• Nichols and his staff – Zach Mason, Sean Teepen and Oliver Harris – welcomed back 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's team. BG finished the 2017 season with a 7-9-1 overall record and a MAC ledger of 1-3-1. Five of the team's setbacks came by one goal on the road to nationally-ranked opponents.
• Nichols returned a total of four players who started at least 16 of the Falcons' 17 matches last year, including juniors Chris Brennan and Anthony Mwembia. Brennan led a balanced scoring attack with five goals and 14 points a season ago, en route to All-MAC Second-Team honors. Mwembia played every second of every match in goal and had a 1.04 GAA, a saves percentage of .780 and seven shutouts. He was named to the All-Ohio Team.
• Senior Tate Robertson started every match last fall, and finished second on the team in scoring. Robertson's 11 points included a BG-best seven assists in 2017.
• In addition to the aforementioned trio, seniors Moe Mustafa and Peter Pugliese, junior Tom Wrobel and sophomores Zach Buescher and Chris Sullivan each made at least 11 starts a year ago.
THE OPPONENTS
• Akron will bring a 4-4-1 record to Cochrane Stadium on Saturday evening. The Zips are coming off a 3-1 loss to Syracuse on Monday, a loss that snapped a three-match winning streak. UA is 2-2-1 at home and 2-2 on the road this year to date. David Egbo has 17 points, including seven goals, while Diogo Pacheco has five goals and 11 points in just four matches. Ben Lundt has played every second between the posts, and has 21 saves and a 1.51 GAA. Head coach Jared Embick and the Zips went 18-4-2 overall and 4-1-0 in the MAC last season. UA won the MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA College Cup semifinals in 2017.
• IUPUI is 2-7-2 on the season, heading into a Saturday home match vs. Milwaukee. The Jaguars dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to visiting SIUE on Tuesday, three days after defeating Oakland. IUPUI is 2-2-1 at home and 0-5-1 on the road this year to date. Tommy Patacca leads the team with two goals and four points, while four of his teammates have one goal apiece. Quinn McCallion has played every second in goal, and has 57 saves and a GAA of just 1.26 for coach Brian Barnett. IUPUI went 0-15-2 overall and 0-9 in Horizon League play a year ago, but this year's team is already 2-2-0 in HL action.
THE SERIES
• BGSU trails Akron, 47-8-4, in the all-time series between the teams, but the teams have played an overtime contest in each of the last two years. Last season, the Zips picked up a 2-1 win in NE Ohio. Two years ago, the Falcons battled Akron to a 2-2 draw at Cochrane. BGSU's last win over the Zips was a 1-0 decision at home late in the 2002 season.
• BGSU leads IUPUI, 4-1-2, in that series, and the Falcons have won the last two matches, both at home. Last season, the Brown and Orange picked up a 2-0 win at Cochrane in the season opener. The last visit to Carroll Stadium saw the teams play to a 2-2 draw in 2015. BGSU has a six-match unbeaten streak in the series, with IUPUI's only win coming in the inaugural meeting in 1994. BGSU is 4-1-0 at home and 0-0-2 on the road vs. the Jags.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the IUPUI matchup, the Falcons will return to Mid-American Conference action with a trip to DeKalb for a Saturday (Oct. 13) contest vs. Northern Illinois.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will return home to face Western Michigan the following Saturday nighit (Oct. 20). That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free to all BGSU soccer regular-season home matches.
• After closing the non-league schedule at Cincinnati (Oct. 23), the Falcons will face West Virginia in Morgantown (Oct. 26) before ending the regular season by facing SIUE (Nov. 3) at Cochrane Stadium.
