Turner Earns MAC East Player Of The Week Honors
January 14, 2019 | Men's Basketball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second time this season, Justin Turner, a redshirt-sophomore guard on the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week. The league office announced the recognition on Monday (Jan. 14) afternoon. Turner shared the honor this week with Buffalo's Jeremy Harris.
Turner starred as the Falcons posted a 2-0 week, and moved to 3-0 in MAC play for the first time since 2004-05. BGSU, on a seven-game winning streak, has won its first three MAC games by 10-plus points for the first time in school history.
On the week, Turner averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Turner shot 48.5 percent (17-of-35) from the field, including a 41.6 percent (5-of-12) clip from downtown, while going a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Turner began the week with a 20-point game in a blowout victory versus Ohio (Jan. 8). In BGSU's overtime win at Central Michigan (Jan. 12), the Detroit native willed his team to a victory. He dropped 30 points, including 12-straight points in OT. Turner, who leads the league in scoring in MAC games (23.3 PPG), also had six assists in the contest. Turner has scored over 20 points a MAC-best 10 times this season.
The Falcon guard became the first BGSU sophomore to score 30-plus points in 15 years. A Falcon has scored 30-plus points a total of 27 times since 2000 – three of those games have been turned in by Turner. Last season, he scored 30 points at Akron (Jan. 13, 2018) and a BGSU-freshman-record 33 points at Drexel (Nov. 10, 2017).
A Falcon has been named the East Division's Player of the Week in three-consecutive weeks. Demajeo Wiggins, who has earned the honor twice this season, earned the recognition last week. The week before that, freshman guard Caleb Fields was named the East Division's Co-Player of the Week. Turner earned the honor on Nov. 26, as well.
Bowling Green will look to move to 9-0 inside the Stroh Center this season on Tuesday (Jan. 15), as the Falcons welcome Ball State to town for a 7 p.m. tip. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a free Michael Huger Bobblehead. Additionally, 200 #ProtectTheStroh posters will be given out.
