October 01, 2019 | Football
In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Bowling Green State University Football, the BGSU Department of Athletics will induct ten football players into the Cast of Honor, recognizing the "Best of the Best" by hanging their names and numbers in Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
The criteria for selecting members to the Cast of Honor is extensive. The nominee must have received his or her undergraduate degree from BGSU or, in the event of early pursuit of a professional career, must have been a student in good academic standing and made significant progress towards a degree. The candidate must have been at least 10 years removed from graduation and be a member of the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, and must have exceptional athletic qualifications such as national award recognition, All-American status, and/or conference player of the year status. Finally, personal conduct, character, integrity, and community and University standing were considered.

Today we look at Kory Lichtensteiger '07, who lettered for Bowling Green from 2004-07.
Â
Kory Lichtensteiger was a two-time first team All-MAC recipient and a 2007 Rimington Award Trophy finalist, awarded to the best center in college football. Lichtensteiger earned the football team's Future Award following his 2003 redshirt season, which is presented to the rookie who shows outstanding scout team effort. At the conclusion of the Falcons' 2004 campaign, which was capped with a GMAC Bowl victory over Memphis, Lichtensteiger was awarded second-team All-MAC as a guard as well as being recognized as a Freshman All-American by The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Â
In 2005, he was again named second-team All-MAC at guard. Lichtensteiger earned first-team All-MAC in both 2006 and 2007 as a center and also appeared in the 2007 GMAC Bowl. He was a two-time team Most Valuable Player, as well as two-time Academic All-MAC. To conclude his collegiate career, Lichtensteiger was a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy, which is awarded to the Best College Football player, considering academics, community service, and on-field performance.
Â
Lichtensteiger entered the 2008 NFL Draft and was selected No. 108 overall, in the fourth round, by the Denver Broncos -- the highest BGSU draft pick since 1994. Over his eight-year career, he played for the Broncos and Washington Redskins, starting in 75 games at guard and center. In 2012, Lichtensteiger was awarded the Ed Block Courage Award, voted on by teammates and presented to the individual who is a role model of inspiration, sportsmanship and courage. He was inducted into the BGSU Hall of Fame in 2018.
Â
"I love Bowling Green State University," Lichtensteiger said. "The experience that pushed me in the direction of Falcon football was watching BGSU take down Missouri in the Doyt. Then after that season, on my official visit, I was able to spend time with some of the veteran offensive linemen. I quickly realized they were my kind of people – work hard and play hard. My four-and-a-half years at BGSU was marked by lifelong friendships, a battle-hardened work ethic, and an opportunity to continue playing the game I love.
Â
"There are so many teammates and coaches who supported and pushed me along the way. My head coach Gregg Brandon gave me a spot on the team and an opportunity on the field. I also have so much gratitude to my two offensive line coaches, Greg Studrawa and Matt Campbell.
Â
"Bowling Green, Ohio is a special place where so many of my great memories reside. I am extremely honored to have my number hanging in the stadium where I spent many of those great moments. I am filled with great pride when I take my children to The Doyt and they get to see where their dad used to play. No matter how old they are, that feeling will never die. I am a BGSU Falcon for life!"
