Singles Play Underway At ITA Regionals, Doubles Play Set To Begin Friday

East Lansing, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University tennis program opened the first day of competition at the ITA Regionals on Thursday (Oct. 17), being one of 22 teams competing in East Lansing. In the first round of singles play, the Falcons saw Marharita-Sophia Tavpash advance to the second round, but fell short. Play will resume on Friday (Oct. 18) with singles play continuing and doubles play beginning.Â

Day One Summary
- After taking the first set 6-4, Tavpash jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, rolling into a 6-1 win to advance to the next round.
- Bettinelli captured an early lead, 2-1, over Northwestern's Streng, but Streng battled back to take the set and eventually the match. Entering play, Streng was listed as the number one seed.Â
- In all, the Falcons had a challenging first round, facing the number one (Streng), three (Ingle), five (Lilien), seven (Mayerova) and eight (Timotin) seeds for the tournament.Â
- As for Bowling Green, Tavpash entered being listed in the 9-16 seed range.Â
- In the second round, Tavpash nearly forced a third set, pushing the second to a 7-5 final, but came up short in the end.Â
