Cougars Stop Falcons, 2-0, Saturday Night
October 19, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Host SIUE got a goal in each half to pick up a 2-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Saturday night (Oct. 19). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Korte Stadium.
The Falcons (7-5-1, 0-2-0 MAC) had more of the possession in the first half, and BGSU doubled up the host Cougars (8-3-2, 2-0-0 MAC) in both shot attempts and shots on goal in the opening period. But, SIUE took the lead when Kelby Phillips scored on a counterattack with nearly a half hour gone.
Andres Delascio doubled the lead for the hosts after a corner kick in the 73rd minute, and goalkeeper Noah Heim and the SIUE defense kept the Falcons from cutting into that two-goal margin the rest of the way.
For the match, the Falcons had a 10-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. Heim made five saves to pick up the win, and was aided by his defense as the hosts were credited with a 'team save' as well.
Senior Anthony Mwembia played well in defeat, making a pair of saves.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 2' | After a steal by the Falcons in the SIUE end, senior Charlie Maciejewski hit a turnaround shot from the top of the box, but Cougars goalkeeper Noah Heim was able to gather it in.
• 11' | An SIUE foul resulted in a BGSU free kick in the offensive end of the field. A quick pass sent Maciejewski down the right side, and he played a low ball into the box, but the assistant referee's flag was raised, indicating an offside call on the Falcons.
• 14' | A cross by sophomore Matt Walters cross from the right side went just behind the lunging Maciejewski, and the ball trickled out to Jensen Lukacsko, who fired a shot from outside the box that went wide left.
• 17' | After a Maciejewski serve into the box, the ball was played back across the 18-yard area. Junior Vinny Worner hit a quick shot in traffic, but Heim went to the ground to smother the low shot.
• 24' | BG stole the ball near midfield, and Walters centered the ball to Maciejewski near the top of the box. The senior slid the ball to his left, and junior Zach Buescher hit a rocket from the circle, but Heim reacted in time to make the stop.
• 27' | GOAL | With BGSU dominating the possession in the opening half, SIUE took the lead on arguably the Cougars' first chance of the night. Kelby Phillips scored from the center of the box after a pass from Jorge Gonzalez on a counterattack.
• 42' | BGSU won a corner when freshman Nathan Masters put a ball into the box for sophomore Ike Swiger, but a sliding defender knocked it over the end line. Off of that corner, junior Achille Robin directed a shot on goal, but the effort was saved.
• 45' | Senior Anthony Mwembia came off of his line to grab a dangerous-looking serve in the final minute of the period.

• 72' | After some quick SIUE passing off of a throw-in deep in BG's end, Mwembia made a diving play to grab a low cross.
• 73' | GOAL | An SIUE corner kick sailed into the box where it caromed off of the head of one of the Cougars. The ball went ot Andres Delascio just outside the penalty area, and he hit a low shot that found its way through traffic and also found the left corner of the net.
