BG Warriors Win Five-Set Frenzy In Front Of Falcon Faithful

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program pulled off their third five-set win of the season on Saturday (Oct. 19), besting Eastern Michigan in an emotional roller coaster of a match. With emotions running rampant through the intense atmosphere of the Stroh Center, the Falcons surged through to capture win number 11 on the season. Powered offensively and defensively by an array of season and career highs, the Orange and Brown advance to 5-3 in the MAC with an 11-9 overall standing.Â

Play-By-Play Notes
- After an 11-11 tie in the first set, the Falcons pulled away with a 5-0 run with Jessi Holly behind the line recording a service ace in the process. The BGSU lead would grow as large as eight in the set.
- The Eagles pulled closer, making the score 22-19, but a 3-0 run would close out the set in favor of the Orange and Brown, giving them a 1-0 lead in the match.Â
- In the second set, the Falcons stayed within a few points for the duration before utilizing a late 5-0 run to tie it up at 23 apiece.
- After an Eastern Michigan timeout Bowling Green rattled off two more points to take a 2-0 advantage.
- The third set played a similar tune as the second, being close for majority of the set before a late BGSU rally tied the set at 22-22.Â
- Eastern would land three of the next four points to take a set, forcing a fourth in the match.Â
- In the fourth set, the first timeout wouldn't be called until a 19-14 lead for Bowling Green, coming from the EMU bench after the Falcons led for most of the way in the set.Â
- With Bowling Green leading 23-21, Eastern Michigan challenged a point that shifted momentum, leading to an EMU lead at 24-23 with a run following the challenge.Â
- Eastern would come away with the fourth set to force a fifth.Â
- In the fifth and final set, the Falcons took control, showing dominance on the attack, leading to a 15-12 victory.Â
Strong Individual PerformancesÂ
- Offensively, the Falcons were led by Katelyn Meyer who set a new career high, surpassing the 20-kill mark for the first time in her Bowling Green career with 28 over the five sets. Meyer complimented the 28 kills with a .338 hitting percentage on a team high 74 attempts, just 12 off of the program record for attempts in a five-set match.Â
- Isabelle Marciniak also had a strong night, setting a season-high for assists with 56. The total nearly set a new career high, which currently stands at 60, a number she has achieved twice in her tenure with the Falcons.Â
- Marciniak also almost set a career high for digs with 21 on the night, just two shy of a mark she set earlier in the season. With the 56 assist, 21 dig line, Marciniak logged her seventh double-double of the season. With seven kills, she nearly had a triple-double, which would have been the first in the MAC this season.Â
- As for digs, the Falcons were led by Julia Walz with 38, a new career high for the sophomore, and a team high for the season.Â
- At the net, Katie Kidwell had a block party, knocking down a total of seven attempts, four via solo plus three assists. Kidwell now has 297 block assists in her career, putting her just seven away from moving up to ninth on the all-time list.Â
- Returning to kills, both Jacqueline Askin and Jessi Holly pitched in double-digit kills for the night. Askin totaled 18 while Holly had seven, also leading the team in service aces with three.Â
- Taylor Haberland also matched a career high in digs with 20 on the night after recording the same number earlier in the season.Â
Up Next
- Next weekend the Falcons will travel north to renew the Battle of I-75 against the rival Rockets on Friday with a 7 p.m. first serve. From there, BGSU will head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State, also at 7 p.m.
- BGSU will return to the Stroh Center on Friday, Nov. 1 to take on Kent State followed by Ohio on Nov. 2. Both matches will serve as the second meetings between the Falcons and their foes. In each previous match the Orange and Brown were victorious, beating Ohio in a heated 3-2 comeback win with a Kent State sweep the next day.
- The match against Kent State will be Trick or Treat at the Stroh with the Ohio match being a "Buy One Get One" event, paired with football. Additional details will be made available the week of.Â
