David Konowalski Named Nominee For Burlsworth Trophy
November 05, 2019 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University captain David Konowalski has been named one of 83 nominees for the 2019 Burlsworth Trophy. Named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman, the Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on. He is one of seven nominees from the Mid-American Conference.
A sixth-year senior defensive end, Konowalski began at Bowling Green in 2014, redshirting his true freshman season. As a redshirt freshman in 2015, he played six games for the eventual Mid-American Conference champions and earned a scholarship following that campaign. Since that time, only injury has kept him out of the starting lineup.
Konowalski started all 12 games in both 2016 and 2017 for the Falcons, becoming the heartbeat for the Falcons. His emotion and leadership off the field matched his value in competition as he recorded 105 tackles over those two seasons, leading BGSU in tackles for loss and quarterback sacks in 2017.
In 2018, Konowalski tore his achilles in the first fall scrimmage but received a medical redshirt to return to BGSU for a sixth season.
Konowalski has returned to form in 2019, posting 45 tackles through the first nine games of the season. His 8.5 tackles for loss again lead the Falcons and he has added 3.0 sacks. Konowalski also has two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He blocked a Toledo field goal attempt just before halftime that gave the Falcons momentum for an eventual 20-7 victory in the Battle of I-75 rivalry game.
