No. 10 Falcons To Battle LSSU For Second Series In Less Than A Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team will travel to face Lake Superior State this weekend, marking the second series between the two teams in less than a month after battling at the Slater Family Ice Arena on Nov. 22-23.Â

Sinking the Lakers
Since the last meeting between Bowling Green and Lake Superior State, the Lakers have gone 0-3-1-1, falling and then tying Bemidji State before being swept by No. 1 Minnesota State. Over the four games, LSSU was outscored by their opponents by a combined total of 13-4, including a 5-1 loss to Minnesota State last Friday (Dec. 6). Max Humitz leads the Laker squad, being atop the stat sheet for goals with nine, points with 15 and penalty minutes with 33. In goal, LSSU has relied on Mareks Mitens, who holds a 3.34 goals against average and an .866 save percentage over 19 games.Â

The second series of the season, the Falcons and Lakers split just a few weeks ago, seeing the Orange and Brown victorious on Friday (Nov. 22) by score of 5-0, before falling short on Saturday (Nov. 23) 3-1. Since joining the WCHA, the Falcons are 10-9-4 against the Lakers while being 85-75-2 all-time.Â

Last weekend, Bowling Green defeated Alabama Huntsville on Friday night (Dec. 6) by a final score of 9-3. The Falcons overcame a 3-0 deficit against the Chargers, scoring nine goals over a span of 23 minutes of game play to claim the win. As for Saturday night (Dec. 7), Bowling Green and Alabama Huntsville went to double overtime, seeing the Orange and Brown net a goal from Max Johnson to claim the second WCHA point.

Falcons Climb To No. 10 In USCHO Poll
On Monday, the Falcons jumped up three spots in the USCHO poll, claiming the 10th spot. This marks the third consecutive week that Bowling Green has risen in the rankings and is also the highest spot of the season. After being in the top 10 last season as well, the Orange and Brown have now been in the top 10 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. The last time the Falcons were ranked in the top 10 was when they held the ninth spot in the rankings that were released January 21, 2019.Â

Following last weekend, Minnesota State joined Bowling Green in being in the top 10 of the USCHO poll, being No. 1 after sweeping Lake Superior State in conference play. In the poll, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, Alaska and Bemidji State received votes. Northern Michigan had an off weekend while Michigan Tech swept Alaska Anchorage. As for Alaska and Bemidji State, they faced each other, seeing Bemidji State take the victory on Friday, followed by Alaska winning on Saturday.Â

Rauhauser Grows Resume For Hobey Baker Award
Senior Captain Alec Rauhauser had another multiple point weekend that ended with a WCHA recognition. After surpassing the 100 career point mark against Notre Dame, Rauhauser tallied another four points this past weekend against Lake Superior State, all assists, moving his career total to 105. In doing so, Rauhauser earned the WCHA Defenseman of the Week honor on Monday, being the second consecutive week he received the recognition. Last week, Rauhauser was also named the WCHA Defenseman of the Month for November, the second consecutive month of receiving that award.Â

Rankings For Rauhauser
Rauhauser has also supported his awards statistically. With two short-handed goals this season, Rauhauser is tied for second in the nation with only Sacred Heart's Jason Cotton having more. As for points, Rauhauser ranks up to fifth among defenseman, averaging 1.06 points per game. As for all players, he is 39th in Division I hockey, which is also where he slots in for assists per game with an average of 0.71 per game.Â
