Johnson, Gustafson Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
February 25, 2019 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Max Johnson and track and field thrower Aliyah Gustafson.
Male Athlete of the Week
Max Johnson, a sophomore from Lakeville, Minn., was the impact player for the Falcons this past weekend at Bemidji State. He opened the series scoring for Bowling Green just 26 seconds into the first game of the series on Friday (Feb. 22) night. He then scored BGSU's second goal on Saturday (Feb. 23) night taking a perfect crossing pass from Brandon Kruse and sending it past BSU's Zack Driscoll. Game two would go the distance eventually ending in double overtime as Johnson would tally an unofficial third goal on the weekend, scoring to take the extra point in WCHA play for the Orange and Brown.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt senior from Iowa City, Iowa, won both the weight throw and the shot put at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend. Gustafson broke the school record with her fourth and fifth career individual MAC Championship and became just the second student-athlete, male or female, to win both events in the same year at the MAC Championships. Gustafson set a season-best in the weight throw and will head to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in the shot put.
