Gustafson Headed To Nationals; Send-Off Set For Tuesday Morning
February 28, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Aliyah Gustafson will return to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. She is the No. 5 seed in the shot put for the meet and will compete on Friday, March 8 at 6:15 pm ET in Birmingham, Ala.
BGSU Athletics will hold a send-off for Gustafson Tuesday at 9:30 am to wish her well as she represents the University, the community and Northwest Ohio. The send-off will take place at the Sebo Center, connected to Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
Gustafson has competed at a national championship three previous times in her career – twice during the outdoor season and once in indoor. A year ago, she finished 10th at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. She has finished 24th and 15th at the outdoor championships.
While Gustafson, who enters with a season-best mark of 17.50m, will be one of the favorites, she will have competition from top seed Sade Olatoye (Ohio State / 17.88m), Samantha Noennig (Arizona State / 17.81m), Laulauga Tausaga (Iowa / 17.79m), Alyssa Wilson (UCLA / 17.73m), Kiley Sabin (Minnesota / 17.47m) and Khayla Dawson (Indiana / 17.42m). Gustafson is the only MAC competitor in the field of 16.
Gustafson won the MAC Indoor Championships in both the shot put and weight throw over the past weekend. With that performance, she was named the MAC Most Outstanding Field Performer. She has five MAC individual championships in her career, the most by a student-athlete in program history.
