Gonzalez drives in both BG runs; Falcons & Ohio meet in Saturday DH
Katie Yun homered twice to lead host Ohio University to a 7-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Friday afternoon (March 22). The game, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Bobcats never trailed after scoring an unearned run in the first inning. Three of the home team's runs were unearned as the defending MAC champions improved to 19-10 overall and 1-0 in league play.
For different players had one hit apiece for the Falcons (10-14, 0-1 MAC). Sophomore Sarah Gonzalez drove in both BG runs with a two-out single in the fourth, cutting the Ohio lead to a single run. But, the hosts answered with single tallies in both the fourth and fifth before putting two runs on the board in the sixth.
BGSU-OHIO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bobcats, as mentioned, got on the board with an unearned run in the first.  Allie Englant reached on an infield error, and after Yun's fielder's choice, BG starter Meredith Miller got Natalie Alvarez – tied with Yun for the team lead with a .406 batting average entering the game – to pop up for the second out. But, Morgan Geno doubled to score Yun with the day's first run.
• In the third inning, Englant led off with an infield hit before Yun – a product of softball powerhouse Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio – homered to center to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
• Ohio starter Madi McCrady allowed only one baserunner in the first three innings, as sophomore Payton Hamm had a one-out single in the first. In the fourth, Hamm reached base for the second time in as many plate appearances, as she was plunked by a McCrady pitch to begin the inning.
• The next hitter, junior Madi McCoy, drew a walk, and several batters later, Gonzalez came through with a two-out, two-run single to center. That hit cut the Ohio lead to a single run, at 3-2.
• But, the 'Cats manufactured a run in the bottom of the inning. Caroline Spacek led off with a walk, and she took second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a grounder to the left side of the infield. Then, Englant singled to plate Spacek and give the hosts a two-run lead.
• BG put a pair of runners on base in the fifth. Junior Logan Everett drew a leadoff walk, and after pinch-runner Kathleen Shier was erased on a grounder, senior Alex Sorgi singled to send junior Taylor Blevins to second. But, McCrady got a strikeout for the second out, and induced the next batter to hit a fly ball to center.
• In the bottom of the inning, Alvarez and Geno drew walks, and after a sac bunt by Alex Day, Deanna Cole was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Miller got Spacek to hit a fly ball to Hamm in left for out number two. But, with Michaela Dorsey at the plate, an infield error allowed pinch-runner MacKenzie Brunswick to cross the plate with the Bobcats' fifth run.
• Then, in the sixth, Yun's one-out homer gave the 'Cats a four-run lead, and after Alvarez was hit by a pitch to get on base, a passed ball moved her into scoring position. Alvarez took third on Geno's base hit and continued home on an error in the outfield.
• In the seventh, Everett and Blevins had back-to-back singles up the Miller with one out. But, Alex Sorgi's liner was caught by leftfielder Englant, who threw to second for a game-ending double play.
BGSU-OHIO STATS & LEADERS
• Ohio had an 8-5 advantage in the hits department. Yun led the way with two homers, and she scored three runs and had three RBI.
• Geno was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for the hosts.
• For the Falcons, five different players had a single. Hamm reached base twice, as she had a base hit and also was hit by a pitch, while Everett had a walk and a single.
• McCrady picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs and five hits in seven innings. She walked two batters and struck out nine.
• Miller suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Miller issued three walks and struck out two batters.
• Sophomore Madison French retired two of the three batters she faced, hitting one batter but not allowing a run or a hit.
