SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team begins a busy week with a pair of midweek matchups in Dayton. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons will put a six-game winning streak on the line with a pair of games at the WSU Softball Field on Wednesday (March 20). BGSU will meet Dayton in a 2:00 p.m. start, then will face host Wright State in a contest scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
• Then, the Falcons will open Mid-American Conference play this weekend, with a three-game series at Ohio. BG and the Bobcats are slated to play a Friday (March 22) single game and a Saturday (March 23) doubleheader at the Ohio Softball Field.
TOUCH 'EM ALL (FOUR FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE FALCONS)
• The Falcons scored a whopping 50 runs in four games at the Morehead State Classic, including a school-record 21 vs. St. Bonaventure on Saturday (March 16).
• In that win against the Bonnies, not only did the BG offense set a program record for runs in a game, but three Falcon pitchers combined on the team's first no-hitter in over nine years. Senior Meredith Miller threw the first three innings, while sophomore Madison French and senior Kiley Sosby each worked one inning apiece. It was BG's first no-no since Zada Lines held Dartmouth without a hit in a 3-0 Falcon win on March 5, 2010.
• In the first four innings of that SBU game, the Falcons hit .727 (16-of-22) with runners on base, .786 (11-of-14) with runners in scoring position and .722 (13-of-18) with two outs.
• The Falcons scored a total of 44 runs over the first 15 games of the season. Over the last six contests – all wins – BGSU has scored 64 times.
DINGERS
• The Falcons hit a total of six home runs over the first 15 games of the season. In the last six contests, BG batters have homered 13 times. BG has had five multiple-homer games in that six-game span.
• BGSU had gone over three years without having a player homer twice in a game prior to Wednesday. Then, it happened twice in a three-game span. Senior Kellie Natham hit two round-trippers in Wednesday's opening game vs. Oakland. Then, on Saturday, Evelyn Loyola had her first multiple-homer game as a Falcon in the win over St. Bonaventure.
• Eight different BG players homered during all of last season. On Saturday, sophomore Payton Hamm went deep in the win over Morehead State, becoming the ninth Falcon to homer this season.
SISTER ACT
• Senior Alex Sorgi and her sister, sophomore Nikki Sorgi, combined for 11 of the Falcons' 24 hits on Sunday. They teamed up for five of the Falcons' 10 hits, including all three extra-base knocks, vs. St. Bonaventure.
• Then, in the Morehead State game, the duo had six more hits, including two for extra bases. They combined to score six runs and drive in five on Sunday.
NIKKI SIXX
• Sophomore Nikki Sorgi was a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate on Sunday. She went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in both games.
• In the SBU game, her three hits included a pair of doubles (in the same inning). Then, against MSU, Sorgi hit a solo home run, her third of the season.
• On the season, Sorgi is hitting .353, and has already topped her 2018 totals in nearly every hitting category. She has eight extra-base hits this season after a total of one as a freshman.
TWENTY-ONE-RUN SALUTE
• The Falcons' total of 21 runs vs. St. Bonaventure, as mentioned, set a new single-game record. The old record was 19 runs, in a 19-3 victory over Defiance in 1981. A list of BGSU's top-scoring games can be found later in this recap.
• BGSU's 21-run margin of victory, obviously, is a new school record as well. The Falcons' most lopsided win prior to Saturday was a 17-0 victory over Wright State in May of 1990.
THE REAL McCOY
• Junior Madi McCoy is red-hot at the plate entering the week. McCoy is hitting .571 over the last five games, with four multiple-hit games in that time. McCoy has raised her batting average nearly 150 points in that time.
• McCoy was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Falcons' second win over Oakland on Wednesday, then had a four-hit game vs. St. Bonaventure and a two-hit contest against Morehead State on Saturday.
• On Sunday, she had a hit vs. the Bonnies, then had three hits, including a homer, and four RBI vs. the Eagles. McCoy scored six runs and drove in nine in the four games at the MSU Classic.
• McCoy was named the MAC Player of the Week by the College Sports Madness web site on Monday.
MILLER NAMED MAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
• On Tuesday morning (March 19), senior Meredith Miller was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week, earning the honor for the second time in her BGSU career.
• Miller went 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA last week, allowing opponents to hit just .203 against her and combining on the Falcons' first no-hitter in over nine years.
SETTING THE TABLE
• During the six-game win streak, the Falcons have had great success in getting the leadoff hitter on base. BG's leadoff batters have gotten aboard at least three times in each game, and have reached 24 of 37 times (.649) during that six-game span.
SATURDAY SUCCESS
• BGSU had a total of 32 hits in Saturday's wins over SBU and MSU, and the Falcons hit .492 as a team. Junior Evelyn Loyola led the way, going 6-for-7 on the day. She had three hits in each game, including a pair of homers vs. the Bonnies.
• Fellow junior Madi McCoy also had six hits on Saturday, going 6-for-9 at the plate. McCoy was 4-for-5 vs. the Bonnies and added two hits against the Eagles.
Loyola and McCoy combined to score seven runs and drive in 12 in the two wins.
THE OPPONENTS
• Dayton enters Wednesday's BGSU game with a 9-14 record. The Flyers went 1-4 at the Miami Invitational in nearby Oxford over the weekend.
• Kyle Davidson leads the team with a .373 batting average, while Lisa Tassi is hitting .349. Each player has six doubles, and they have scored a combined 35 runs.
• In the circle, Jessica Gilliam has made 10 starts, and is 4-6 with a team-leading 4.65 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Jessica Weaver is 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA.
• Coach Cara LaPlaca and the Flyers finished 31-25 overall and 15-8 in Atlantic 10 Conference play a year ago. UD was picked to tie for second in the A-10 in the 2019 preseason coaches poll.
• Wright State is 8-12 on the season, and the Raiders have been idle since dropping a game vs. host Kennesaw State on March 10. WSU plays a twinbill at Morehead State on Tuesday afternoon before hosting Dayton (4:30 p.m.) and BGSU on Wednesday.
• Jordyn Poulson and Rebekah Lenos are hitting .344 and .341, respectively, while Madison Whitaker – one of four players named Madison in WSU's lineup – had team-leading totals of three homers and 17 RBI.
• Olivia Otani has started 11 of WSU's 20 games, and is 4-6 with a 3.65 ERA.
• Coach Laura Matthews and the Raiders finished 21-32 last year, going 12-10 in Horizon League play.
• Ohio is 17-10 on the year, heading into a Tuesday twinbill at Pittsburgh. The Bobcats are hitting .308 as a team, and are coming off of a 2-2 weekend at the Hoosier Classic. One of the Bobcats' two wins was against nationally-ranked Indiana.
• Natalie Alvarez and Katie Yun are hitting .400 and .390, respectively. Morgan Geno, the reigning MAC co-Player of the Week, is hitting .381 with totals of 10 homers and 39 RBI.
• Mackensie Kohl is 7-2 with a 2.83 ERA, while Madi McCrady is 10-6 with a 3.16 ERA and 79 strikeouts.
• First-year coach Kenzie Roark took over a Bobcat team that went 40-17 overall and 20-3 in the MAC, capturing the conference regular-season and tournament titles.
THE SERIES
• BGSU leads Dayton, 19-2, in the all-time series between the schools. The Falcons captured a pair of narrow road wins in the teams' last meetings, in early 2013.
• The Falcons lead Wright State, 13-4, in that series, but the host Raiders captured a 6-4 win over the Orange and Brown late last season.
• BGSU leads Ohio, 57-54, in that series, but Ohio took two of three games vs. the Falcons last year. BG captured the series opener at Meserve Field early last May, and BG is now 28-22 in home games, 19-26 on the road and 9-6 in neutral-site matchups with Ohio over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the Ohio series, the Falcons will play a twinbill at Purdue Fort Wayne next Wednesday (March 27), before opening a three-game series vs. Toledo at Meserve Field. The Falcons and Rockets will play a single game on Friday, March 29, and a doubleheader the next day.
