May 16, 2019 | Women's Track and Field
Ottawa – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Kaila Butler will represent Team Canada in the hammer throw at the 2019 Summer Universiade (FISU), as announced by Athletics Canada today. The bi-annual World University Games will celebrate its 30th anniversary July 3-14 in Napoli, Italy and will feature nearly 9,300 athletes and delegates from 128 countries.
A native of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Butler is the reigning Mid-American Conference hammer throw champion. She won the title by more than 12 feet just a week ago by throwing the hammer 209-feet-9. She is ranked among the top 20 collegiate throwers and will be a favorite to advance through the NCAA preliminary round to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
During the season, Butler won the hammer throw competition at Louisville's Lyles/Wood Invitational, Miami's Blizzard Buster, the Ball State Challenge and the Toledo dual meet.
Butler is one of 27 women set to compete in track and field for Team Canada. Track and field competition will take place at San Paolo Stadium with qualification rounds scheduled for July 9-11 and finals on July 12-13.
Bowling Green volleyball player Madeline Garda was a member of Team USA for the most recent World University Games, held in 2017. BGSU has had at least one student-athlete compete in four consecutive World University Games competitions.
