Falcons Picked to Capture Conference Crowns

BGSU is the choice of the MAC coaches to win both the regular-season & tournament titles
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team has been picked to capture both the Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles this season. The 2019Â preseason poll, the result of voting by the conference's 12 head coaches, was released by the league office on Monday morning (Aug. 19).
Head coach Matt Fannon's club garnered totals of 139 points and eight first-place votes to outdistance Ball State in the preseason poll. BGSU and BSU finished first and second, respectively, in the final regular-season standings a year ago, then met in the conference tournament final. In that match, the teams battled to a 1-1 draw before the Falcons captured the crown via penalty kicks.
The Cardinals received 126 points to finish second in the 2019 preseason prognostications. Kent State was picked to place third in the poll, followed by Buffalo, Ohio, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Akron, Toledo, Miami and Northern Illinois. KSU received two first-place votes and BSU and Akron one apiece.
Six of the 12 MAC coaches picked BGSU to repeat as league tournament champions, with KSU earning three votes, WMU two and Buffalo one.
Fannon – the two-time MAC Coach of the Year – and his staff welcome back a total of 17 letterwinners, including six starters, from last year's team. The Falcons are the defending Mid-American Conference champions, having captured the 2018 conference regular-season and tournament titles. BG finished the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 14-5-3 and a MAC ledger of 10-1-0.
Last year's club tied the school record for overall wins and shattered the program mark for conference victories. BGSU captured the league regular-season crown for the second time in history, and won the league tournament title for the third time ever.
In Fannon's first two years, the Falcons have posted an overall record of 27-12-4 and a league mark of 16-5-1. BG is 20-6-2 in all games (regular season and tournament) vs. MAC foes in that time.
BGSU outscored MAC opponents, 31-7, in 14 regular-season and tourney matches vs. conference competition last fall. The Falcons scored at least two goals in 10 of those 14 matches, and never allowed more than one goal in a match vs. a MAC opponent.
The Falcons defeated Oakland, 3-0, in the team's lone 2019 scrimmage on Wednesday (Aug. 14) evening. The regular-season opener is set for Thursday night (Aug. 22) at Kentucky, and BGSU's home opener will take place a week from Friday – Aug. 30 – when Valparaiso ventures to Cochrane Stadium.
