Falcons Open Season At Raising Canes Invitational

BGSU kicks off its fall season with a trip to Eastern Kentucky
Richmond, Ky. – The BGSU Men's Golf team will open its 2019 fall season with a trip to Eastern Kentucky, where they will take part in the Raising Canes Invitational.
The fall season will feature four events and the spring season will have seven events. Bowling Green's spring season includes trips to Texas, South Carolina, Arizona and Missouri among other stops.
The 2018-19 team posted three top five finishes as a team, including finishing third at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational for the best team finish of the season. The Falcons also finished fifth at the Mid-American Conference Golf Championship, which was the best finish since 2013.
New Faces
The 2019 roster includes four new faces with one incoming freshman and three transfers. Dylan Fitchet is the lone freshman on the squad. Fitchet is from North Kingsville, Ohio and attended Eastwood High School. Fitchet finished second at the OHSAA Division II State Championship, earning All-State Honors and claimed medalist honors at the District Championship, which qualified him for the State Finals. He finished under par in 12-of-14 matches throughout the 2018 high school season, carrying a nine-hole average of 33.7. He was also the two-time All-American Conference (Ohio) Player of the Year at Edgewood High School.
Among the transfers include Ian Mackenzie-Olson, Tom North and Roni Shin. Mackenzie-Olson, a junior and Bemidiji State transfer, is from Plymouth, Minnesota. He carried a 74.3 average with a low round of 67 at Bemidji State, earning several awards along the way including being a Two-time NSIC First Team All-Conference selection, NCAA Division II Super Regional Qualifier and the Bemidji State Men's Athlete of the Year. Mackenzie-Olson carded a scoring average of 71.3 during the summer, with notable finishes coming at USGA Amateur Qualifying (70-70) and the Minnesota Amateur (75-73-72) after winning his qualifier with a 69. He narrowly missed out on qualifying for the PGA Tour 3M Open after firing rounds of 68 in pre-qualifying and 66 in the Monday Qualifier.
Tom North led his school (William Woods) to five wins last season, winning once individually and led the team with a 74.1 stroke average and finished fourth place at the conference championship, team won the title. He placed 26th individually at the National Championship, team finished in ninth place and qualified for match play at the English Men's Amateur with scores of 71-73. North finished second place in the Faldo Series North at Moortown, shooting 66-71-72 and fired rounds of 68-75-72-66 in the Berkshire Trophy to finish 11th. Roni Shin averaged a 74.35 as a freshman at Baldwin Wallace, earning All-OAC honors and a 12th place finish at the conference championship. His average ranked third all-time for the Yellow Jackets. Shin earned OAC Golfer of the Week in April after a medalist finish in the College of Wooster Nye Intercollegiate. He won the Mount Union Fall Invitational by four strokes with rounds of 71-70. This summer, shot rounds of 73-70 in USGA Amateur Qualifying, 71 in the Tigertown Open and averaged 74.4 across his events.
Familiar Faces
The Falcons return four student-athletes who participated in action a season ago in Nick Hofland, Curtis Hughes, Rodrigue Vie and Ward Kyle. Kyle, a redshirt freshman, posted a stroke average of 75.00 in three rounds of action at the Boarder Olympics where he finished T63 with a score of 225. Hughes, a sophomore, posted a stroke average of 75.00 across nine rounds of action and appeared in three tournaments. He finished T31 at the Dayton Flyer Invitational for his top finish of the year, posting a score of 222.
Rodrigue Vie and Nick Hofland played in the most tournaments among the returnees. Hofland posted a scoring average of 75.77 across 25 rounds of play. Hofland's best performance last year was at the Musketeers Classic where he finished T23 with a total score of 221. Vie Posted a stroke average of 74.36 across all 11 tournaments on the season and posted the two best individual finishes of the season for the Falcons with a score of 209 at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational (Sep. 8-9), and a score of 141 at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate (Apr. 8-9) Vie was named MAC Golfer of the Week on Sept. 13, as well as Jet's Athlete of The Week for his performance at the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational. The junior was named Jet's Athlete of The Week for the week of April 15 for his performance at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate and was a 2019 Men's Golf Academic All-MAC selection with a GPA of 3.80.
