Falcons Begin Weekend Play At Purdue Invite

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University tennis program began play at the Purdue Invite on Friday, an event that will take place all weekend, concluding on Sunday. Five of the seven Falcons advanced in singles play with one of the three duos doing the same in doubles. Play will resume tomorrow in West Lafayette.Â

Schwartz Bracket (Singles)
Quarterfinals
- In singles play, sophomore Laura Silveira fell short against DePaul's Temilayo Adelakun in three sets, winning the second. Silveira will continue to play, moving into the consolation bracket to face Northern Illinois' Lara Slisko, who fell in straight sets in the first round.
Basham Bracket (Singles)
Quarterfinals
- Junior Yulia Kapitanova advanced to the second round against Connecticut's Selen Takunyaci. Kapitanova will take on Eastern Michigan's Natalia Regalado in the semifinals.
- Following suit, freshman Maria Jose (Majo) Magro topped Cincinnati's Amanda Huser in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-1. Magro will face Northern Illinois' Fernanda Naves, making for an All-MAC semifinals in the Basham Bracket.Â
Boiler Up Bracket (Singles)
Quarterfinals
- Fellow freshman Joanna Tsadari bested Luciana Rabines of Connecticut in three sets, claiming the first and the third for the victory. Tsadari's next opponent will be Diana Wong of Louisville, who won in straight sets.Â
Hammer Down Bracket (Singles)
Quarterfinals
- Marta Bettinelli fell just short to host Purdue's Zala Dovnik, falling in straight sets, but nearly capturing the first set that ended in a 7-5 score. Bettinelli in playing the consolation bracket, going head-to-head with Eastern Michigan's Vasavi Ganesan.
Gold Bracket (Singles)
Quarterfinals
- Senior Marharita-Sophia Tavpash captured the win over Wright State's Andreea Craciun, working for the victory, winning 6-4 and 7-6 (4) to advance. Louisville's Rhea Varma will be the next opponent for Tavpash.
- Similar to Bettinelli in the Hammer Down Bracket, senior Ayumi Sasaki fell to Ball State's Jessica Braun, 7-6 (3) and 6-0. Sasaki will play Seira Shimizu of Purdue in the consolation bracket.Â
Purdue Bracket (Doubles)
Quarterfinals
- The duo of Magro / Silveira began by facing Jovicic / Yergler of DePaul, falling 8-4 and moving to the consolation side of the bracket.
- Magro and Silveira then faced another DePaul duo, Ghanem / Adelakun, beating them 8-7 (5) to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.Â
Gold Bracket (Doubles)
Round of 16
- Sasaki / Kapitanova fell short to Ball State's Sec / Kaplan in the first round, but advanced in the consolation bracket thanks to a bye at the top of the bracket. The duo will next face Bou / Moureau of Connecticut in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.Â
Black Bracket (Doubles)
Round of 16
- Tavpash / Bettinelli continued their winning ways from the BGSU Invitational, topping Ball State's Herrington / Braun, 8-4 to advance.
- In the next round, the Falcon duo went up against Connecticut's Ravines / Takunyaci by a score of 8-2, moving them to the semifinals where they will take on Louisville's Wong / Vujanic.Â
