
Montemurri, Mwembia Key 1-0 win over Wisconsin

Freshman scores in his BG debut, senior keeps his 21st career clean sheet as BG moves to 2-0-1
Freshman Michael Montemurri scored late in the second half, lifting the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin Friday evening (Sept. 6). The non-conference neutral-site match, the opening contest of the Lakeside Classic, was held at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium in Evanston, Ill.

Montemurri, making his collegiate debut, netted the lone goal of the match in the 81st minute. Senior Chris Brennan and junior Chris Sullivan had assists on the play.

Senior goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia recorded his 21st clean sheet of his career and second in as many matches, making two saves against the Badgers.

"I am really pleased with the performance and even happier for the guys. They were doing all the right things in terms of soccer, and they could have gotten frustrated by not getting a goal, but they stay dialed in and kept the pressure on."

NOTES AND NUMBERS
-The Falcons out-tallied Wisconsin in shots (8-4) and shots on goal (4-2). Through three matches of the season, BG has outperformed its opponent in both categories in every match so far.Â
-The Orange and Brown also recorded nine corner kicks to Wisconsin's two, also marking the third time in as many games the Falcons have had more corners than the opponent on the season.Â
-Both Wisconsin and Bowling Green received one yellow card apiece. Â
-Junior Vinny Worner made his 2019 debut for the Falcons after missing the first two matches of the year due to injury. Worner came off the bench to record 44 minutes of time for BG.
-Chris Sullivan and Chris Brennan each picked up their first assists on the season. Both now have a total of three points on the season. Brennan's lone shot of the game was also on goal which is now his third straight game recording at least one shot on goal. The senior now has 32 career points.
-Senior Anthony Mwembia now has a 0.31 goals against average and has a total of seven saves on the season. Mwembia and the Falcons defense have only allowed three total shots on goal over the last two matches, shutting out the opponents (Robert Morris and UW).
-With Montemurri's appearance in tonight's match the Falcons have now had four freshmen play this season. He joins Abdi Faqi, Eli Shope and Colin Iverson in picking up their first collegiate caps. Â
The last time the Falcons beat a Big Ten foe was September 24, 2016, when BG beat Ohio State by a score of 2-0.Â

12' | The Falcons take consecutive corners. The first is headed over the bar by Colin Iverson. The second is cleared out by the Badgers.
25' | The Badgers line up for a long throw that is cleared out. The Badgers retain possession and play a through ball into their striker which forces Anthony Mwembia into a tough save.
38' | The Falcons work the ball around at the top of the box which lead to an eventual shot taken by Kale Nichols that is bobbled but collected by Badger goalkeeper Dean Cowdroy.
42' | A contested header by the BG defender leads to a foul called by the referee 30 yards from the Falcons goal. This free kick leads to a ball flicked out for a Badger corner. The corner is eventually worked out by the Falcons.
51' | Chris Sullivan drives into the box and wins the Falcons their first corner of the half taken by Charlie Maciejewski. The corner is cleared out and played back in, only to be eventually picked up by the Badger goalkeeper.
