After a narrow 24-17 defeat at Ohio State earlier in the season, the Falcons entered the historic game with a 6-1 record. The contest marked the first time in Mid-American Conference history that an affiliated school hosted College GameDay. It's only happened one other time since.
The Falcons finished the 2003 season with an 11-3 record, and defeated Northwestern of the Big Ten by a score of 28-24 in the Motor City Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.
