Gottshall allows just one earned run against WKU offense
A pair of Western Kentucky pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Hilltoppers downed the Bowling Green softball team, 2-0, Sunday morning (Feb. 16). The game was the Falcons' fifth and final contest at the Chattanooga Challenge.
With the win, WKU is now 8-2 on the year, and the Hilltoppers have won seven consecutive games. The Falcons drop to 2-3 on the young season.
In four previous games at the Chattanooga Challenge, WKU had outscored opponents, 41-7, racking up an average of 10.25 runs per game. But, on Sunday, Falcon freshman Payton Gottshall allowed just one earned run in a complete-game effort.
The Hilltoppers had seven hits, and Gottshall walked five batters while striking out five.
WKU starter Shelby Nunn allowed just two hits through five innings, walking one Falcon, and reliever Kelsey Aikey worked a pair of hitless innings to pick up the save. Aikey walked one batter and struck out three.
Seniors Taylor Blevins and Logan Everett had the Falcons' hits.
BGSU-WKU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hilltoppers put at least one runner on base in every inning, but Gottshall kept the game scoreless until the fourth. In the first, she worked around a one-out bunt single and a two-out walk.
• Blevins led off the home half of the first inning with a single to left, but Nunn then retired the next 12 BG batters.
• The Toppers loaded the bases with just one out in both the second and third innings, but Gottshall worked out of the jam on both occasions. In the second, she struck out Jordan Thomas and got Taylor Davis to ground out to redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees at first.
• In the third, Kennedy Sullivan led off with a single, and Paige Carter walked with none out. One out later, an error loaded the bases, but Gottshall proceeded to make both Carli Crowder and Maddie Bowlds swing and miss.
• But, WKU broke through in the fourth, as Thomas doubled with one out, took third on a grounder and scored on Sullivan's single through the left side of the infield.
• Dees walked to lead off the Falcon fifth, and Everett singled with two away. But, a double play helped quell that BG rally.
• The Toppers doubled the lead in the seventh. Kendall Smith singled with one out, and after a fielder's choice produced the second out, Crowder walked and pinch-hitter Princess Valencia reached on an error, with a run crossing the plate on the play.
• Aikey walked junior Nikki Sorgi on four pitches with one away in the BG seventh, but the WKU hurler got a strikeout and a grounder to third to seal the victory.
• Sullivan went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Hilltoppers' attack. She had the only RBI of the game.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return home to prepare for another tournament in Tennessee next weekend (Feb. 21-23). BGSU will head to Nashville to take part in the Tiger Classic, hosted by Tennessee State. In addition to a game against the host school, the Falcons will face Central Connecticut State twice and Rider and Creighton once each.
