BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Redshirt-junior guard Justin Turner's jumper with 2.2 seconds left in regulation lifted the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team to a 62-61 victory over Ohio University on Saturday (Feb. 22). The Mid-American Conference contest was played in front of 3,795 fans inside the Stroh Center, marking the program's seventh-largest crowd in the arena's nine-year history.
After an and-one layup from Ohio's Ben Vander Plas, the Bobcats led by a score of 61-58 with just 43 seconds left in regulation. Turner was fouled on BGSU's ensuing possession, and made both free throws in a one-and-one situation to pull the Falcons within a single point with 30 seconds to play.
The Falcons proceeded to foul OU's Ben Roderick with 19 seconds remaining in the ballgame. Roderick missed the one-and-one. Turner grabbed the rebound, glided into the front court, and hit a step-back jumper near the top of the key to give the Falcons the victory. Ohio was not able to get a shot off as time expired.
Bowling Green is now 20-7 overall on the season. BGSU has won 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1947-48 and 1948-49 seasons. The Falcons have won 20-plus games 15 times in school history.
Since 2018, Bowling Green has racked up a record of 26-3 at the Stroh Center. That record is good enough for a conference-leading .897 winning percentage. The Falcons are 12-1 at home in 2019-20. BGSU is 52-24 at home in the Michael Huger Era.
Bowling Green and Akron are tied atop the conference standings with identical 11-3 league records. There are just four games left in the regular season. The Falcons host Akron at 7 p.m. at Stroh Center on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Junior forward Trey Diggs nailed a career-high seven triples (7-for-10) and finished with a team-high 22 points. Turner finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden added seven points and eight rebounds.
