Redshirt junior quarterback Matt McDonaldĀ enters the spring as the frontrunner for the starting quarterback position in the 2020 season. A transfer from Boston College, McDonald appeared in two games in 2018 for the Eagles, completing 7-of-8 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.Ā
Ā
In high school, McDonald was a standout quarterback at one of the nation's premier programs at Mission Viejo High School in California. As a senior, he threw 39 touchdowns to just six interceptions, and completed 64 percent of his passes. He was rated the No. 51 pro-style quarterback in the country entering college.Ā
Ā
McDonaldĀ has the most experience in the quarterbackĀ room,Ā andĀ alsoĀ has familiarity with Scot Loeffler's offense from the season they spent together at Boston College.Ā Ā
Ā
"Matt has more experience than anybody," Quarterbacks Coach Max Warner said. "He's been in the offense for four years, had a great offseason with Coach Loeffler andĀ msyelf, and he's developing mentally and physically. There probably is not a hungrier guy in college football right now than Matt McDonald."Ā
Ā
Backing up McDonald will be redshirt freshmanĀ LaBronz Davis and early enrollee Tucker Melton, a true freshman. Freshman Riley Keller will join the program in the fall from Whitmer High School in Northwest Ohio.Ā Ā
