Indianapolis, Ind. – Bowling Green State University has established a new school record as five teams were recognized today by the NCAA for APR excellence. Men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's golf and volleyball earned NCAA Public Recognition for ranking among the top 10 percent in their respective sport in the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR).
For women's golf, it is the eighth consecutive year and 11th time in 15 years in which the program has earned public recognition from the NCAA. Men's cross country earned the honor for the seventh straight year and men's golf was recognized for the third consecutive year. For volleyball, it is the first time since 2013-14 but the fifth time in total. Women's basketball was recognized for the first time in program history.
Throughout the Mid-American Conference, 42 teams received NCAA Public Recognition. BGSU was one of three schools atop the league with five teams recognized, joining Miami (Ohio) and Ohio. Eleven of the conference's 12 full members had at least one team recognized this year.
"We are very proud of our student-athletes for their dedication to academic achievement," Chet Hesson, Assistant AD for Academics and Student Services, said. "These five teams have been consistently ahead of their peers academically and their effort and success does not go unnoticed. Congratulations!"
BGSU had a school record four teams recognized for the 2004-05, 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years. However, this year's total of five sets the new standard.
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or quarter, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years.
