Willie Lightfoot Signs NLI To Join Bowling Green Men's Basketball
November 13, 2021 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Willie Lightfoot, a 6-foot point guard from Niagara Falls, N.Y., has signed an NLI to play for the Bowling Green State University men's basketball program. Lightfoot selected Bowling Green over offers from Alabama, Marquette, Minnesota, Oregon and Buffalo.
"I am excited to welcome Willie Lightfoot to our family," said Head Coach Michael Huger. "Willie is a dynamic point guard, relentless on-ball defender and has an elite ability to create shots for both his teammates and also himself. While we were recruiting him, I was continually impressed with his ability to navigate a ball screen and operate off of a pick-and-roll. Likewise, our up-tempo style will be a perfect fit for Willie's game. He is someone that we believe will make an immediate impact on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Willie has competed at a high level, playing for some of the strongest high school and prep programs in the nation, and will bring a competitive mentality with him to BGSU. Welcome to Bowling Green, Willie!"
Lightfoot has consistently posted impressive numbers with, and against, some of the best teams in the nation. As a freshman at Niagara Falls High School, he averaged 18 points and 5.3 assists per game while being the 54th ranked player in the country for the class of 2022 by Future150.
Lightfoot's success followed him to Sunrise Christian Academy where he played for a Top 10 team in the nation in 2019-20 before the team rose to being the No. 3 team nationally in 2020-21. Both seasons Lightfoot averaged 10 points and four assists per game, including achieving a 21-4 record last season.
This season, Lightfoot put up 24 points and six assists for the North Carolina Good Better Best Academy against the nation's No. 1 team (AZ Compass Prep). Lightfoot was the 84th ranked player in the nation during the 2019-20 season by 247Sports and held that ranking up until June 2020. He is currently the 32nd ranked point guard in the country.
"I chose Bowling Green because of their trust in me," said Lightfoot. " From the first time they saw me, they showed me tons of love, and were consistent with their recruiting. The coaches, style of play, campus and program all felt like a perfect fit for me. Coach Huger is someone that I can relate to, and he also played point guard at a high level. I'm excited to officially be a Bowling Green Falcon and play in the Mid-American Conference. The MAC and Bowling Green always have really good guards, and I can't wait to prove myself at that level and help BG win some MAC Championships.
