December 30, 2021 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program will begin play within the Mid-American Conference on Saturday (Jan. 1). Kicking off the new year and the conference schedule, BGSU will travel to Muncie, Ind. to face the Ball State Cardinals on New Year's Day, the Falcons' first road game in a month. Set for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off, the game between the Falcons and Cardinals will be available to stream on ESPN3. Fans can also tune in to the action via radio on WFRO Eagle 99. Live stats will be provided by bgsufalcons.com with live updates available on Twitter (@BGSUMHoops).Â
The meeting between the Falcons and Cardinals will be the first of two this season between the teams and the 91st all-time. Bowling Green has been the winner in five of the last six meetings and hold a record of 14-3 over the last 17 games of the series, dating back to the 2011-12 season. The Orange and Brown have also been victorious in the last two games played in Muncie. Â
A Bowling Green Win Would …Â
Browsing Ball StateÂ
Ball State enters the contest after an up-and-down non-conference schedule, resulting in a 5-6 standing for the Cardinals. Ball State picked up wins of 20+ points over Indiana State, IU Kokomo and Eastern Illinois, but also fell by 20+ to Xavier and Illinois State. Sophomore guard Luke Bumbalough leads the Cardinals statistically, averaging 12.5 points per game.
Leading The NationÂ
The Falcons have had 13 different players reach double-digit scoring at least once this season. This marks the highest total in the nation. Next on the list is a four-way tie between Stanford, Fairfield, Washington State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, all with 11 different players hitting the mark.
Rebounding Among The BestÂ
The Falcons are one of the best rebounding teams in the nation going into conference play. BGSU ranks second in the country for total rebounds per game, averaging 44.2 rebounds per game, second to only Kentucky. That success has come in large part to success on the offensive boards, averaging 14.6 offensive rebounds per game, which is sixth in the nation. As for defensive rebounds per game, the Falcons are 15th in the nation with a mark of 29.6 per game.
Perfect End To The Year
The Bowling Green Falcons played a total of four games in December three of which took place at home in the Stroh Center. During the Coach Huger Era, now in its seventh season at BGSU, the Orange and Brown have performed the best during the month of December. When playing during the calendar's 12th month, Huger's Falcons have recorded a record of 25-12 for a .676 win percentage, the best winning percentage of any month during Huger's tenure. This season was no different as the Falcons went a perfect 4-0 in the month of December.
