Metheny, Nevels Named Medical Mutual Athletes Of The Week
March 01, 2021 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Medical Mutual Athletes of the Week, as selected by the strategic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's basketball player Kaden Metheny and track & field sprinter Savannah Nevels.
Male Athlete of the Week
Kaden Metheny, a freshman from Morgantown, W. Va., had a historic week shooting the basketball, leading the Falcons to a pair of road wins at Eastern Michigan (Feb. 23) and Akron (Feb. 26). For the week, Metheny averaged 22.0 points and shot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the floor, including an impressive 11-for-20 (55.0 percent) mark from downtown. In BGSU's win at EMU, Metheny fell just one triple shy of tying the school for three-pointers in a game, as he went 8-for-14 from three-point range. Metheny scored a career-high 29 points, finishing just four points off the BGSU freshman single-game scoring record. To close out the week, the freshman point guard added 15 points and five assists to help the Falcons end Akron's 14-game home unbeaten streak.

Savannah Nevels, a senior from Streetsboro, Ohio, had a dominant weekend at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning two events and placing third in another. Nevels became the first Falcon in program history to win the MAC Championship in the 200, racing to a time of 24.65 to defeat her nearest competitor by .21 seconds, teammate Jemeila Hunter. She added a personal-best time of 7.51 seconds in the 60 to earn the bronze in that event and become the third-fastest woman in program history. Nevels closed out the meet as one of four sprinters in the 1600 relay, an event that BGSU won in back-to-back seasons. The team's time of 3:45.85 is the third-fastest in program history, but Nevels has been a member of each of the four fastest relay performances in school history.
