BGSU Tennis Begins MAC Play With Victory Over Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University tennis program began play within the Mid-American Conference on Friday (March 12) with a 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois. The Falcons were able to claim the doubles point on the day before winning five of the six singles courts as well en route to the 6-1 final. With the win, the Falcons are now 1-0 to start MAC play while being 5-2 on the season. The win also extends the win streak for the Orange and Brown that has now reached four straight wins. The Falcons will be back in action on Sunday (March 14) to face Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. for their second MAC match of the campaign.

Making Of The Match
- The Falcons began the day by picking up the doubles point. Bowling Green was victorious on two of three courts, seeing No. 2 doubles pick up a 6-2 final while No. 3 doubles had a 6-3 final.
- In singles play, the Falcons picked up an additional five points with four of the courts only needing two sets to do so. The one that went to three sets was No. 1 singles. After coming up short in the first set, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash battled back strongly in the second for a 6-1 final before closing out the match with a 10-8 third set win.
- At No. 2 singles, the Falcons saw Ioanna Tsadari win in straight sets with 6-4 and 6-1 final scores.
- Ayumi Sasaki also claimed a singles win, coming at No. 4 singles. Sasaki was able to win the first set in shutout fashion with a 6-0 score before closing out the point with a 6-2 second set.
- Moving to No. 5 singles, Selina Karg continued the hot start to her freshman campaign with her sixth singles win of the season, coming with final scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
- As for No. 6 singles, Marta Bettinelli was able to pick up a win as well thanks to scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
Falcon Stat Facts
- Claiming a pair of wins, Ayumi Sasaki moved up all three all-time lists. For singles, she took sole possession of 26th all-time with 58 wins. As for doubles, she's now up to 51 career wins which puts her in a tie for 29th all-time with Erin Bowbeer. In combined wins, the duo of victories puts Sasaki's career total at 109, tying her with Polina Radeva for 27th all-time.
- Picking up a singles win, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash tallied career singles win 60 to move her into a tie for 23rd all-time with Mary Hill. The win also gives Tavpash sole possession of 14th all-time in the combined wins list, now with 140.
- With another singles win, freshman Selina Karg is now 6-0 in singles play this season, being 2-0 in each of No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Karg is also 5-1 in doubles play for an 11-1 cumulative record this year.
Up Next
- Bowling Green will stay on the road and continue MAC play with a match against Western Michigan on Sunday (March 14) set for 1 p.m.
- The Orange and Brown will be back at home on Friday, March 19 for the team's first MAC match at home, hosting Buffalo for a 1 p.m. start.
