HISTORY MADE! Falcons Advance to Record-Setting 13-0 With Victory Over CMU
March 05, 2021 | Volleyball
Mount Pleasant, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball program advanced to a record-setting 13-0 on the year following a 3-1 win over Central Michigan on Friday (March 5). The win breaks the previous record set at 12-0 by the 2011 team while also tying the 1992 team for the best MAC start in program history. Additionally, it is believed that the 13-0 start is the third best in BGSU Athletics history while also being the best among women's athletics at Bowling Green. Going further into the record book, Julia Walz landed six aces in the four sets to tie the program record for aces in a four set match. Now, the Falcons will return home to the Stroh Center on March 11 and 12 to host Eastern Michigan. Both matches are set for 4 p.m. starts and will be broadcasted on ESPN platforms.Â

Falcon Stat FactsÂ
- With the win, the Falcons move to 13-0 on the season, breaking the record for the most wins to begin a season, previously set at 12-0 by the 2011 team. The 13-0 start also matches the best MAC start in program history, now tied with the 1992 squad.Â
- The 13-0 start is also believed to be the second best in BGSU Athletics history, trailing just the 14-0 start by the 1942-43 men's basketball team and the 15-0 start by the 1964 men's tennis team.Â
- Julia Walz also tied a program record herself, landing six aces in the match. The mark sets a career-high for Walz while tying the program record for four sets. She joins Linda Popovich, Sheri Fella and Jessica Andrasko in the feat. Walz also led the team in digs with 21, her sixth time amassing at least 20 digs in a match this season.Â
- Alex Laboy registered 14 digs herself, the second-highest mark on the team for the match and a new career-high for the freshman. Yelianiz Torres also had a season-high for digs with seven.Â
- Petra Indrova also reached double-digit digs with 11 to accompany her 14 kills, tallying her seventh double-double of the season.Â
- Only one player logged more kills than Indrova, seeing Katelyn Meyer with a team-high 16 in the match. Jacqueline Askin also hit double digits with 11 to go along with a season-high three aces.Â
- At the net, Katie Kidwell tallied seven blocks in the contest with a season-high two solos as well. With nine over the two matches against Central Michigan, Kidwell is now up to 454 career total blocks.Â
Coach Tomic's Take
- "I am thrilled that this year's team, this group of student-athletes made history today. The character of our women, an unmatched level of commitment to be the best that they can be, and above all, the love for each other and the game is what defines this team for me, not the record we hold. Today's game was a story of highs and lows, so we still have work to do to become more consistent. The first two sets were very good offensively, especially once our defense stepped up and created offensive opportunities. One constant throughout the match that had a significant role in our victory was our aggressive serving. We will enjoy this historic day for 24 hours, reflect on the journey we have had so far and then get back in the gym to continue working and striving to be the best that we can be."
