Bowling Green Stays Perfect At Home Following Win Over Cleveland State

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis program remained undefeated at home following a 4-3 victory over Cleveland State on Friday (March 5). The win moves the Falcons to 4-2 on the season while being 3-0 when playing at home. The Falcons began the day by picking up the doubles point before Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Selina Karg and Ayumi Sasaki all picked up wins in singles play to secure the win for the day. The Falcons will now prepare for MAC competition, taking on Northern Illinois on March 12 and then Western Michigan on March 14.

Making Of The Match
- Beginning in doubles, the Falcons saw Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Yulia Kapitanova jump out to a 5-0 lead before claiming a 6-1 final to get the day started.
- The duo of Marta Bettinelli and Selina Karg was able to win at No. 3 doubles as well to grant the Falcons the point and begin with a 1-0 lead.
- Moving to singles play, Tavpash finished up first, allowing her opponent to tally just one point on the day with 6-0 and 6-1 finals, advancing the BGSU lead to 2-0.
- Just seconds after Tavpash concluded, Selina Karg also logged a win for the Falcons with scores of 6-2 and 6-0 to push the BGSU lead to 3-0.
- After Cleveland State claimed two singles points, the Falcons continued to fight back. Going three sets, Ayumi Sasaki picked up the clinching fourth point of the day for the Falcons. Taking the first set in a 6-2 final, Sasaki saw the next two sets need seven points to settle a winner, but she pulled through to push the day's score to 4-2 Falcons before a 4-3 final.
Falcon Stat Facts
- Winning at No. 1 doubles, Margarita-Sophia Tavpash tallied her 80th doubles win of her career, moving past her former partner Paula Comella on the all-time list. Tavpash is now tied for fifth all-time with Emily Reuland.
- Tavpash also moved up the all-time singles list as well with her 59th career win. That mark ties her for 24th in program history with Katie Grubb. As for the combined wins list, the two victories put Tavpash at 139 for her career, tied with Jenny Schwartz for 14th all-time.
- With the singles win, Ayumi Sasaki moves into a tie with Jenny Cheung for 26th all-time in singles wins with 57. As for combined wins, the victory moves Sasaki's total to 107, giving her sole possession of 28th in program history.
Up Next
- The Falcons will be back on the court next weekend on March 12 to begin MAC play against Northern Illinois, set for a 1 p.m. start. Bowling Green will stay on the road for a match against Western Michigan on March 14, also set for 1 p.m.
- The Orange and Brown will be back at home on March 19 for the team's first MAC match at home, hosting Buffalo for a 1 p.m. start.
