Spring 2021 Breakdown: Quarterbacks
April 02, 2021 | Football
Throughout the spring, BGSUFalcons.com will breakdown each position for the 2021 BGSU football program. Today, we dive into the offensive line.
Â
Part 1 -Â Tight Ends
Part 2 -Â Offensive Line
Bowling Green, Ohio – As with most teams, one of the most important positions for the Falcons in 2021 will be quarterback. Bowling Green's fortunes at the position last season were tied to former Boston College quarterback Matt McDonald, who was unable to play in 2019 after the NCAA failed to clear his wavier of eligibility following his transfer from BC.
Â
McDonald finally made his debut in 2020, but played through injury as an offense in transition struggled to find success. The Falcons will look to the 6-3, 210-pound redshirt junior McDonald again in the fall, though BGSU Head Coach Scot Loeffler has said that the job will be contested this spring.
Â
McDonald is currently recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent in January, leaving spring practice wide open for several young quarterbacks on campus to gain experience, meaningful reps and to earn an opportunity to compete for the starting job.
Â
Quarterbacks coach Max Warner will be tasked with the continued development of McDonald once he has returned from injury, as well as evaluating the play of his young quarterbacks throughout spring practice.
Â
Highly-touted, second-year freshman Tucker Melton is a former three-star recruit who chose BGSU over offers from Akron and Southern Mississippi, among others. After missing the fall campaign due to injury, he is one of the favorites to end up on the two-deep depth chart.
Â
Riley Keller, a 6-1, 210-pound Whitmer product from Toledo was also a three-star recruit who chose BGSU over offers from Iowa State, Ole Miss, West Virginia, Northern Illinois, Toledo, and Western Michigan. His cousin is current Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Â
LaBronz Davis, who is 6-3 and weighs 207 pounds, was the only quarterback to have game experience among the backups headed into spring. Davis attempted two passes for the Falcons in 2020 and he provides unique upside considering his size and athleticism.
Â
Drew Gunther, at 6-3 and 220 pounds, is a redshirt freshman who did not play in 2020. He is new to campus, having previously transferred from Syracuse.
Â
Kody Sparks, who is 6-5 and weighs 220 pounds, is a freshman who did not play in 2020 after arriving to campus via Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Sparks is the tallest quarterback on Bowling Green's roster.
