Falcons Tally First Sweep In MAC Play With Win Over Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University tennis program picked up their first sweep of the MAC season and their second overall in the 2020-21 campaign on Friday (April 9) with a 7-0 final against Eastern Michigan. The Falcons saw two wins on the doubles courts to begin the day, the third being unfinished, before tallying wins on every singles court as well to achieve the sweep. The sweep is the second for the Falcons this year after previously sweeping Bellarmine in their second match of the year. The win moves the Falcons to 5-3 in MAC contests this season while being 9-5 overall. The win also keeps the Falcons in third place in the MAC standings with first place Ball State next on the schedule this coming Sunday (April 11) at home.

Making Of The Match
- The Falcons began the day by claiming the doubles point thanks to wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Beginning with No. 3 doubles, the duo of Yulia Kapitanova and Hannah Neuman tallied a 6-3 win to get the day started as they competed together for the first time this season.
- At No. 2 doubles, the pair of Ioanna Tsadari and Ayumi Sasaki captured a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for the Falcons and grant the team a 1-0 advantage.
- Moving to singles, the first court to conclude was No. 5 singles where Yulia Kapitanova allowed her opponent just one point over the two sets for 6-0 and 6-1 scores to add a second point to the BGSU total.
- The next court to finish up was No. 4 singles with Selina Karg tallying scores of 6-1 and 6-3 to push the lead to 3-0 for the Orange and Brown.
- The Falcons clinched the win for the day with a win from Ayumi Sasaki at No. 3 singles. Sasaki won with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to secure the victory with a 4-0 lead.
- With the win secured, Bowling Green continued to add to the total with a win from Marta Bettinelli at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
- The next point for BGSU came from Marharita-Sophia Tavpash at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 to push the Bowling Green lead to 6-0.
- Rounding out the day was Ioanna Tsadari at No. 2 singles. After falling just shy in the first set at 7-6, Tsadari battled back to take the second set 6-4 before concluding the match with a 10-5 score to clinch the sweep for the Falcons.
Falcon Stat Facts
- With a singles win, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash moved up the all-time wins lists. Now with 65 career singles wins, Tavpash has sole possession of 19th all-time.
- With a pair of wins on the day, Ayumi Sasaki also moved up the all-time wins lists. Beginning in singles, Sasaki tallied her 64th career singles win, now tied with Tracy Howitt and Katia Babina for 20th all-time. Sasaki also tallied a doubles win, the 55th of her career to place her in sole possession of 26th in program history for career doubles wins. With a total of 119 career wins combined, Sasaki also moved into 26th all-time on the combined wins list as well.
