Senior SS earns league weekly honor after prolific weekend in her home state
Bowling Green State University softball standout Madi McCoy has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Tuesday afternoon (May 11).
McCoy earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Additionally, she was listed among the NFCA's Louisville Slugger/Wilson Selected Top Performances of the Week.
McCoy, a native of Washington, Ill. (Washington), hit .571 with a slugging percentage of 1.333 as the Falcons went 5-1 last week. She drove in a run in the first game and had a hit in the second game as BGSU swept a DH from Western Michigan on Tuesday.
Then, she hit .688 (11-for-16) with a slugging pct. of 1.688 in the Falcons' four-game series at Northern Illinois. During the NIU series, McCoy reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances, and after the Huskies finally got her out (on a line drive to RF), she homered in her final two at-bats in the series.
McCoy had a hit in BG's 1-0 win in the series opener in DeKalb, then went 10-for-12 (.833) over the final three games of the series. In the second game of Friday's DH, McCoy set a school record for hits in a game, going 5-for-5, and she had two doubles and two homers among those five hits.
On Saturday, McCoy went 2-for-3 with two more doubles and a walk in the afternoon's first game, then was 3-for-4 with five RBI in the final game of the series. In that last contest, she homered two more times, for her second multiple-HR game in as many days and her third in the last week and a half.
McCoy is the first player in BGSU history ever to have three multiple-homer games in a season, and she has tied the school record (originally set by Hayley Wiemer) with four multi-HR contests in her career.
On the season, McCoy is hitting .384 with 14 doubles, 11 homers, 42 RBI and a slugging pct. of .709. She is now batting .433 with a slugging pct. of .808 in MAC games.
The Falcons head to Kalamazoo for a Wednesday (May 12) doubleheader vs. Western Michigan. The twinbill marks BGSU's final scheduled games of the 2021 season.

FALCON SOFTBALL: FIVE (OR POSSIBLY SEVEN) THINGS TO KNOW
• BGSU is 26-26 overall and 18-19 in MAC play heading into Wednesday's twinbill at Western Michigan. The Falcons went 11-6 overall last spring, but BG has not finished over .500 in a full season since 2013 (27-24). Regardless of Wednesday's results, BG will finish with the program's highest winning percentage in MAC play since the 2014 season, and the Falcons are looking to finish above .500 in conference action for the first time since 2012.
• Senior SS Madi McCoy, as mentioned above, had a monster series as BGSU won three of four games at Northern Illinois. The Washington, Ill., native hit .688 (11-for-16) with a slugging pct. of 1.688 in the four games, and reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances at one point. After the Huskies finally got her out (on a line drive to right), she homered in her final two at-bats in the series. McCoy went 10-for-12 (.833) over the final three games of the series, with four doubles and four homers in that stretch.
• McCoy set a school record for hits in a game, going 5-for-5, and she had two doubles and two dingers among those five hits. She had a pair of two-homer games in DeKalb, giving her three in the span of a week and a half. McCoy is the first player in BGSU history ever to have three multiple-homer games in a season, and she has tied the school record with four multi-HR contests in her career.
• McCoy – who was named MAC Player of the Week on Tuesday – currently ranks among the top-three Falcons on a pair of career lists. She has a slugging percentage of .621 as a Falcon, and currently ranks first on that career list. Her career batting average of .350 places her third on that chart.
• McCoy and redshirt freshman Greta L'Esperance each are ranked near the top of a number of single-season lists. McCoy is just four RBI away from the school record, and she is also among the top 10 in doubles, homers, total bases, slugging percentage and batting average. L'Esperance is ranked among the top-10 on the single-season lists for hits, runs scored, stolen bases and batting average.
• BONUS THING TO KNOW: Redshirt freshman Payton Gottshall already has broken the school record for strikeouts in a season, and is poised to shatter two more BGSU records. She is averaging 10.09 strikeouts per seven innings this season, and the school record currently is 8.46 by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Vrabel in 2005. Gottshall is currently averaging 10.16 strikeouts per seven innings in her career, well ahead of Vrabel's school record of 7.12.
• ONE MORE THING YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW: BGSU trails WMU, 54-36, in the all-time series, but the Falcons posted a pair of wins (3-1 and 4-3) over the Broncos at Meserve Field last week.
