Michigan Rallies to Down Falcons, 2-1
August 22, 2021 | Women's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan scored what proved to be the winning goal with just over 15 minutes left, downing the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team by a 2-1 score Sunday night (Aug. 22). The non-conference match was held at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons, now 0-2-0 on the young season, got on the board quickly, as Lacee Bethea scored with less than a minute gone in the match. But, the Wolverines (2-0-0) benefited from an own goal in the 12th minute, before Nicki Hernandez scored the winner at the 74:59 mark.
Lili Berg made four saves in the match, including a diving stop of a penalty kick off the boot of U-M's Sammi Woods.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Lacee Bethea gave BGSU the lead in the opening minute of Sunday's match, scoring with just 50 seconds gone. Bethea's goal was the second-earliest goal in a match in program history.
• Only Corbie Yee scored earlier, finding the back of the net just 19 seconds into a match at Xavier on Sept. 21, 2008.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Each of BGSU's last two matches at U-M Soccer Stadium have been narrow 2-1 setbacks to the Wolverines. Prior to Sunday night, the Falcons' last match there came in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Championships (Nov. 15, 2019).
• BG scored first in both matches, with Mackenzie Reuber recording an assist on each goal. Reuber assisted Chelsee Washington in the 35th minute of the 2019 contest, and she slid a pass to Lacee Bethea, who scored with just 50 seconds gone in Sunday's match.
• And, in both matches, U-M's Nicki Hernandez scored the winning goal. She broke a 1-1 tie at the 78:58 mark in the NCAA tourney, and scored at 74:59 on Sunday evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 1' | GOAL | Kennedy White stole a U-M pass near midfield, and took the ball down the right side of the pitch and into the penalty area. She played it back to Mackenzie Reuber at the top of the box, and Reuber slid the ball toward the center of the area. Nikki Cox, with two Wolverine defenders near her, deftly redirected Reuber's pass toward Lacee Bethea on the far side of the box, and Bethea hit a one-time effort that beat U-M goalkeeper Hillary Beall and nestled into the net just inside the right post.
• 12' | GOAL | Michigan equalized on an own goal. Meredith Haakenson got her head on a diagonal ball from the right side, and the ball appeared to be going wide of the far post. But, as BGSU goalkeeper Lili Berg attempted to track it down, the ball hit a Falcon defender on the shoulder and sailed into the vacated net.
• 20' | After a U-M foul, Madi Wolfbauer put the ensuing free kick on frame, but her shot from distance was stopped by Beall.
• 24' | A Michigan free kick was played to Sydney Shepherd, and her header hit the crossbar before it was cleared away by BGSU's Rachel Muller.
• 40' | Wolfbauer took a pass from the right side, settled it and hit a volley off of the bounce, but her shot was directly at the U-M 'keeper.
• 54' | The Wolverines had a dangerous-looking threat, but as a low cross ping-ponged around the penalty area, the assistant referee's flag went up and a U-M striker was whistled offside.
• 56' | The hosts had another good chance on a counterattack, as Nicki Hernandez slid a pass to Danielle Wolfe on her left. But, Wolfe's shot went wide of the far post.
• 58' | A BG ball was played forward to Nikki Cox, who laid it into the path of the onrushing Wolfbauer, but Wolfbauer's shot from outside the box went wide.
• 64' | Off of a corner kick, Michigan's Skylar Anderson was free, but headed her shot wide at the far post.
• 71' | A U-M cross was deflected by a BG player, and the ball went to Hernandez. She faked a shot in the box, made a quick cut to her right and fired, but her shot hit a Wolverine teammate and caromed to Berg, who made the stop.
• 75' | PK SAVED | A PK was awarded as a U-M player went down on the right side of the 18-yard box. Woods took that PK, but Berg made a headlong dive to make the save, tipping the ball wide of the right post and out of bounds for a corner kick.
• 76' | GOAL | Off of that corner, though, Hernandez made a run toward the near post and redirected the ball on frame. Berg got a piece of the point-blank shot, but the ball trickled into the net.
• 79' | Reuber made a nifty move to get around her defender on the right side of the box. She hit a hard cross from near the end line, but Beall was able to grab it out of the air.
• 83' | Off of a throw-in the ball was laid back to U-M's Hannah Blake who blasted a shot that went just wide of the upper right corner of the frame
• 88' | BG took possession of the ball near midfield, and after a series of quick passes, Reuber found Wolfbauer on the right side. Wolfbauer's serve into the box was headed by a U-M player, and White ran onto the ball and hit a quick shot that went just wide from about 10 yards out.
QUOTING COACH WALKER
"We played a great game tonight. We competed really well from the first minute to the last minute. We came out of the gates fast, we were really organized and we were tough to break down. We did so many things well. Unfortunately, just like the Notre Dame game, we made a few mistakes and Michigan punished us for them. So there's a little bit of frustration there, as we did so well and deserved more out of this game."
"The players are unhappy right now, because they played a great game and wanted to get a result. But we are trying to play great competition to make us better. We played Notre Dame on the road the other night, and competed well against an ACC school. And tonight, we've come on the road again and given one of the top teams in the Big Ten everything they could handle, but came up just short after a couple of little mistakes. So it's frustrating, but it's also encouraging, because playing games like this one will make us better."
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERSÂ
• Lacee Bethea's goal at U-M was the second of her BGSU career. She scored in last season's opening game, a 3-0 win over Akron.
• Mackenzie Reuber's assist on the Bethea goal was the seventh of her career. She ranks second among active Falcons in career assists, trailing only Nikki Cox.
• Cox picked up the other assist on the Falcons' goal, and now has 11 assists in her BGSU career to date.
• Michigan had advantages of 16-8 in total shot attempts and 5-4 in shots on goal. Lili Berg made four saves for the Falcons, while Hillary Beall had three stops for the Irish.
• Despite the loss, BGSU is 47-21-8 overall since the start of the 2017 season. The Falcons are 31-7-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 38-8-3 in all games vs. conference foes in that time.
• And, since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, the Falcons are 34-14-7 overall, 25-3-0 in MAC regular-season action and 30-3-2 in all games vs. league opposition.
