Falcons Look To Extend Win Streak Against Eastern Michigan This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will be back on the road for two matches this weekend, traveling to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Falcons will play a pair of matches against Eastern Michigan. Friday's match (Oct. 21) is set for a 6:00 p.m. start while Saturday (Oct. 22) is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Falcons are in the midst of a four-match win streak, including three straight 3-0 victories. The Orange and Brown swept Central Michigan in back-to-back matches before picking up a sweep over Miami on Wednesday (Oct. 19).
Bowling Green leads the all-time series against Eastern Michigan with a record of 39-28 when facing the Eagles. The Falcons have won five straight against EMU, including being winners in eight of the last nine meetings. The last five matchups between the Falcons and Eagles have been played in Bowling Green, making this series the first trip to Ypsilanti for the Orange and Brown since the 2018 season. The Falcons have won the last two matches between the two teams played in Ypsilanti.
Going Against The Eagles
The Eastern Michigan Eagles are 2-1 in their last three matches, sweeping the Miami RedHawks twice before being swept by Central Michigan. The pair of wins over Miami moved Eastern Michigan to 3-18 for the season and 2-7 within the conference. EMU opened the season 0-9 before picking up their lone non-conference win, being a 3-0 victory over Radford. After the win over Radford, the Eagles lost eight straight, including six consecutive MAC matches, leading up to the Miami sweeps. EMU then faced Central Michigan this past Wednesday (Oct. 19), falling in three sets.
The Eagles are led on the attack by senior outside hitter Samantha Basham with 203 kills. Basham has been a leader at the service line for EMU as well with a team-best 22 aces. On the defensive side, freshman Emma McMahon paced Eastern Michigan in digs with 307 while fifth year middle blocker Raeven Chase is atop the blocks sheet with 79. The stat leaders round out with two setters above the 300-mark with sophomore Kendall Burk (403) and junior Olivia Szylar (323).
Falcons In Conference Play
Dating back to the start of the 2017 season, Bowling Green has posted a record of 81-15 (.844) in conference play during the regular season, including going 44-4 (.917) since 2020. Over that same stretch, the Falcons are 21-3 (.875) when playing against MAC opponents on the road. Since 2017, the Falcons have tallied three MAC Regular Season titles and one MAC Tournament title as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Efficient Attack
The Falcons have logged a season-best hitting percentage in back-to-back matches. On Saturday (Oct. 15) against Central Michigan, the Falcons were able to register a hitting percentage of .300. The Orange and Brown followed that up on Wednesday (Oct. 19) with a mark of .349 against the Miami RedHawks. The first set established the success in both matches. Against CMU, the Falcons hit .455 in the first set before hitting .452 in the first set against Miami.
Tales Of The Tape
There have been two stats this season that have been consistent with the results of the match for the Falcons. BGSU is undefeated this season when registering a better attack percentage than their opponent, being 11-0 in such matches. Similarly, the Orange and Brown are 12-0 this season when winning the first set of the match. The Falcons are also 8-0 when winning the third set and 5-0 when winning the fourth set.
