Falcons Earn 3-0 Win Over Cougars on Senior Night
October 21, 2022 | Men's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team scored early in each half Friday night (Oct. 21), posting a 3-0 win over Chicago State University. The Mid-American Conference matchup took place at Cochrane Stadium.
Joey Akpunonu's penalty kick gave the Falcons (4-4-5, 2-1-2 MAC) the lead with under seven minutes gone, and Sergi Martinez doubled the BGSU lead just 88 seconds into the second half.
Freshman Trace Terry scored his first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute to complete the scoring.
Brendan Graves made five saves on the night, earning his sixth shutout of the season and his third in as many matches. Graves and the BG back line have surrendered only seven goals in 13 matches this season.
Sunny Dhaliwal made five saves for the Cougars (1-11-3, 0-6-0 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• On Senior Night at Cochrane , the Falcons got on the road early. Joey Akpunonu was taken down in the penalty area as a Sergi Martinez corner kick sailed into the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. Akpunonu stepped up and blasted that kick past CSU goalkeeper Sunny Dhaliwal to give BGSU the lead for good at the 6:55 mark.
• BGSU had 16 total shots in the opening half, but could not add to that lead. Included among those shots were a Nathan Masters effort that rang off the post and a Josh Erlandson header that hit the crossbar.
• The Cougars threatened at the half-hour mark, but Brendan Graves stopped back-to-back shot attempts by the visitors.
• Late in the half, off of a Martinez corner, Amer Dedic put a header on frame, but Dhaliwal was able to make the stop.
• Less than 90 seconds after halftime, the Falcons doubled the lead. Masters worked a combination play with Kyle Cusimano, taking the return pass and heading toward the center of the field along the 18-yard line. Masters slid the ball to Martinez, who hit a turnaround shot from just outside the box that gave BGSU a two-goal margin.
• BG closed the scoring at the 71:13 mark. Freshman Andrew Shaffer put a diagonal ball into the box from the left side. For an instant, it looked like Dhaliwal would be first to the ball, but freshman Trace Terry got a toe on the ball, diverting it past Dhaliwal and into the net.
• Graves helped preserve the shutout when he made a save of a hard shot by Florian Ouaddour with just under 17 minutes to go.
