Top Teams Clash
Ball State enters the weekend with a MAC West-leading 9-2 conference record, matching the Falcons in the East. After beginning conference play 0-2 with two losses to CMU, the Cardinals have rattled off nine straight MAC wins to take over the top spot in the West. Despite the nine MAC wins, the Cardinals are 3-2 against MAC opponents on the road. All-time, Ball State leads the series with a record of 45-20-1 against the Falcons with the last six meetings being an even split, seeing each team with three wins since the start of the 2019 season.
The Cardinals are paced by the senior duo of middle blocker Marie Plitt and outside hitter Natalie Risi. Both Plitt and Risi have tallied 232 kills this season. Plitt has also tallied 60 blocks this season, second on the team, while maintaining the second-best hitting percentage in the MAC with a mark of .402. Ball State is also led by sophomore setter Megan Wielonski who has a team-high 987 assists in addition to 37 aces, both stats that are second in the MAC.
The Battle Of I-75
The Toledo Rockets will visit the Stroh Center on Saturday for the Battle of I-75. UT enters the weekend in the midst of an up-and-down stretch, being 4-4 in their last eight matches. Despite the back-and-forth results, Toledo has maintained a 7-4 MAC standing to be second in the MAC West. The Falcons lead the series all-time with a record of 58-17 over the Rockets. The Falcons have won six of the last seven meetings. The last sweep in the series came during the 2008 season, being a 3-0 victory for the Falcons at home.
The Rockets are led on the attack by junior outside hitter Taylor Alt. Alt currently leads the conference in kills with 302, averaging 4.03 per set. On the defensive side, senior Ryann Jaqua paces the team with 403 digs, just one of three players in the MAC with 400 or more digs this season. Jaqua is also 16th in the nation for digs per set. As a team, the Rockets enter the weekend second in the MAC for opponent hitting percentage and third for service aces.
Falcons At Home
The Falcons are in the midst of a six-match win streak when playing at home after topping Miami (OH) last week. Overall, BGSU is 7-1 inside the Stroh Center this season with the only loss coming to then-No. 22 Western Kentucky. Since the start of the 2020 season, the Falcons hold a record of 28-2 when playing at home with their last home conference loss being during the 2020 campaign.
Hovey Tallies Second Triple-Double
Last Friday (Oct. 21), freshman Lauryn Hovey concluded the five-set match with 20 assists, 13 kills and 10 digs to register her second triple-double of the season. Hovey's first came on Oct. 8 with 22 assists, 13 kills and 10 digs. Hovey is one of 13 players, including just three freshmen, in the nation with multiple triple-doubles. No freshman, and only eight players in the country, have three or more triple-doubles this season.
Indrova Enters Top 10 All-Time
Over the weekend against Eastern Michigan, senior outside hitter Petra Indrova totaled 70 attacks for the Falcons, bringing her career total to 3,338. In hitting the mark, Indrova surpassed Lori Kemerer (1996-99) for 10th on the all-time career attack attempts list. Indrova is now aiming to pass Danielle Tonyan (3,354, 2020-13) for ninth on the list and Lisa Mika (3,481, 1988-91) for eighth. Fellow senior Katelyn Meyer broke the program record for the stat earlier this season and holds the top spot with 4,819 attack attempts and counting.
On The Attack
The Falcons have been among the top in the nation this season when it comes to the attack. BGSU is currently averaging 37.53 attacks per set, the 11th highest mark in the nation. The efficiency of that attack has played a key role for the Orange and Brown this season. When the Falcons log a better attack percentage than their opponent, Bowling Green holds a 12-0 record. Similarly, the Falcons are 12-2 this season when logging an attack percentage north of .201.
