BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball program will begin the 2022-23 season on the road against West Virginia on Friday (Oct. 28) for a charity exhibition. The Falcons and Mountaineers are set to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in Morgantown, W. Va. with all proceeds benefiting the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund.
The Falcons enter the 2022-23 campaign with two exhibitions, hosting Mansfield on Tuesday (Nov. 1) for the second. The official start to the season for the Orange and Brown is set for Nov. 7 as Bowling Green hosts Air Force for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Bowling Green heads to Morgantown with a new look to the roster. The roster will consist of eight returners, four transfers and three freshmen. Among the returners for BGSU is Morgantown native, Kaden Metheny. Metheny returns to action after missing time last season and is just a season removed from being named to the All-MAC Freshman Team following the 2020-21 season. Metheny is joined in returning this season by seniors Brenton Mills, Isaac Elsasser, Chandler Turner, Samari Curtis and Gabe O'Neal. The returners round out with sophomore Jackson Watson and redshirt freshman Ubongabasi Etim.
As for the newcomers, two seniors join the fold. Leon Ayers III arrives from Duquesne where he averaged 10.0 points per game with 14 starts and a mark of 83.3% from the free throw line. Ayers also averaged more than a steal per game. The second senior will be Madani Diarra from Indian Hills C.C. with previous stops at St. Louis and Eastern Illinois. The 6-foot-11 senior made seven starts over 16 games last season.
The transfer list will also include juniors Rashaun Agee and Sam Towns. Agee began at New Mexico State before playing the 2021-22 season at Casper College. Last season, Agee was named First-Team All-Conference, First-Team All-Region, a NJCAA Division-I All-America nominee and finished as the No. 65-ranked JUCO player in the nation. As for Towns, he joins the Falcons after playing for the Ohio Bobcats. With OU, Towns played in 27 games last season with two starts, totaling 56 points and 68 rebounds over the course of the season.
The Orange and Brown will also welcome three freshmen to campus this season. Willie Lightfoot comes to the Falcons ranked the 32nd-point guard in the country for the incoming class. As a freshman in high school, Lightfoot was the 54th player in the Class of 2022 by Future 150 before playing his sophomore and junior high school season with a top-10 team in the country. Playing for North Carolina Good Better Best Academy as a senior, Lightfoot posted 24 points and six assists against the nation's No. 1 ranked team.
The next freshman on the roster is Anthony McComb III from Dayton, Ohio. McComb reached 1,000 career points at Thurgood Marshall as just a junior, being named an All-Ohio honorable mention. He played his final high school season at Trotwood Madison, averaging 26.6 points per game. McComb spent the 2021-22 season at Flyght Academy Prep, averaging 23.2 points while shooting 54% from the field and 41% from three.
The freshman class rounds out with 6-foot-9 freshman forward Jamai Felt. Felt captained Our Saviour Lutheran to a 29-6 record in 2021-22, the best record in school history. He averaged 22 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks per game en route to three tournament championships and multiple tournament MVP awards.
