Fleming, Hampton to Captain 2022-23 Falcons
October 07, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Lexi Fleming and Nyla Hampton have been named captains of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team for the 2022-23 season. The duo was chosen in a vote by team members.
"We are really excited about the leadership of Nyla and Lexi," said head coach Robyn Fralick. "It is an honor to be chosen by your teammates for this role, and I know they will give their best, day in and day out, for the program."
Fleming, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio (Mercy McAuley HS), has been named a team captain for the second-straight year. Â She missed the 2021-22 season due to injury after being named the MAC Freshman of the Year the previous season. She also was named to the All-MAC Second Team in her initial year in Bowling Green. In that '20-21 campaign, Fleming led the Falcons in scoring with 15.9 points per game, and also paced the team in minutes played (33.1 mpg), free throws made (89) and attempted (111), FT percentage (.802), steals (67) and steals per game (2.48) in her initial season in Northwest Ohio. Her total of 67 steals that year was the highest by a freshman in BGSU history. Fleming was one of 15 players, but the only freshman, to be named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Midseason Watch List in January of 2021. She made the preseason watch list for the Becky Hammon award last year before suffering her injury.
Hampton, a native of Huber Heights, Ohio (Wayne HS), has been named to the MAC's All-Defensive Team in each of her first two seasons with the Falcons. The junior guard was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2021-22 as well. She finished among the top-25 players in the nation in both total steals (86, 17th) and steals per game (2.69, 23rd). Hampton's total of 86 steals last winter was the fourth highest in school history, and after two seasons, she now has two of the top-10 steals-per-game averages on that BGSU single-season list. With 2.54 spg in her career, Hampton is on pace to set the school record in that category. She enters the 2022-23 season with career totals of 493 points and 158 assists.
