Falcons To Host Akron This Weekend For Final Regular Season Homestand

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will remain home at the Stroh Center for their final home weekend series of the season, hosting the Akron Zips for two matches. Friday's match (Nov. 4) is set for a 6 p.m. first serve and will be the Unity Match for the Falcons. As for Saturday (Nov. 5), the match will start at 4 p.m. with Senior Night following the match.
The Falcons lead the all-time series against Akron with a record of 46-17 against the Zips. Bowling Green has won five straight against Akron. Additionally, the Falcons have won 14 of the last 15 matchups against the Zips as well as 20 of the last 22. As for playing in Bowling Green, the Orange and Brown have been the victors in 10 of the last 11 matches to be played inside the Stroh Center. The first matchup dates back to 1976, a win for BGSU that started an 11-match win streak against Akron.
At The Matches
During Friday's Unity Match, MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher will be in attendance to present Bowling Green with the MAC Diversity and Inclusion Award.
Saturday, the Orange and Brown will be recognizing six seniors following the match: setter Hanna Laube, middle blocker Madelynn Luebcke, outside hitters Katelyn Meyer and Petra Indrova and defensive specialists Julia Walz and Yelianiz Torres.
Analyzing Akron
The Akron Zips will enter the weekend with a 5-19 overall record while being 2-11 within the Mid-American Conference. The Zips are coming off a five-set loss to Eastern Michigan, the team's fourth straight loss. The Zips have tallied two conference wins this season, being a five-set victory over Western Michigan and a 3-0 sweep over Kent State. As for playing on the road, Akron is 1-8 this season. The team's lone road win was the three-set win over the Golden Flashes. Akron also tallied a neutral site win this season, topping George Mason in four sets at the Seton Hall Invite.
The Zips are led on the attack by two student-athletes with more than 260 kills. Redshirt senior Teagan Ochaya leads the way for Akron with 280 kills while junior Faith Johnson is close behind with 261. The Zips have also utilized a two-setter approach with redshirt freshman Baylee Vought and freshman Avery Brown logging 400 and 359 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, senior Lauren Latka has a team-high 300 digs with Ochaya second on the team with 209.
Indrova Moves Up All-Time List
After entering the Top 10 all-time for career attack attempts against Eastern Michigan, Petra Indrova didn't waste any time moving higher up the list. Last weekend, Indrova tallied 59 attacks over the two matches, bringing her career total to 3,397. The new mark for Indrova moved her up to ninth on the all-time list, passing Danielle Tonyan (2010-13). Next on the list for Indrova will be Lisa Mika (3,481, 1988-91) for eighth, needing 85 to make the pass. Fellow senior Katelyn Meyer broke the program record for the stat earlier this season and holds the top spot with 4,851 attack attempts and counting.
Double-Doubles
Last weekend, the Falcons added two more double-doubles to the season tally. Jaden Walz logged her ninth of the season against Ball State with 18 assists and 12 digs while Petra Indrova had her ninth of the year against Toledo with 15 kills and 25 digs. As a team, the Falcons have now logged 25 double-doubles this season in addition to two Lauryn Hovey triple-doubles. Walz and Indrova each have nine double-doubles while Hovey has registered seven.
Home Court Advantage
Entering the final home weekend of the 2022 season, the Falcons are currently averaging the highest home attendance in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green has averaged just shy of 1,000 fans per match, ranking first in the MAC and 62nd in the nation. The Falcons are 8-2 inside the Stroh Center this season, including four 3-0 sweeps at home. Ohio is currently second in the conference and 64th in the nation as the only other MAC team with an average attendance above 900.
Falcons Efficient On The Attack
Against Toledo, the Falcons registered a .333 attack percentage over the four sets. The match marked the third time in the last six matches that the Falcons finished with an attack percentage of .300 or better. BGSU logged a mark of .300 against Central Michigan before putting up a season-best .349 against Miami (OH). In the match against the Rockets five Falcons logged a hitting percentage of .280 or better while three finished above .540.
