The Next Chapter: Falcons Return To NCAA Tournament Against Western Kentucky Thursday

LEXINGTON KY. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball program will enter the next chapter of the 2022 season, competing in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. BGSU will ride an eight-match win streak into the tournament, facing Western Kentucky in the first round on Thursday (Dec. 1). The match against the Hilltoppers is set for a 4:45 p.m. start in Lexington, Ky. at Memorial Coliseum. The Falcons are coming off the program's fourth consecutive appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship and the team's second tournament title in the last three seasons, topping Ball State in five sets.
The Falcons and Hilltoppers met once earlier this season, playing during the second week of the season as part of the Hampton Inn Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green. WKU entered that match ranked No. 22 as well and came away with a 3-1 win. For the Falcons, Kat Mandly led the way with 19 kills while Lauryn Hovey added 10 and Yelianiz Torres tallied four aces. As for the Hilltoppers, Lauren Matthews landed 17 kills followed closely by Paige Briggs with 16, combining for a .394 attack percentage.
This match will mark just the third meeting all-time between Bowling Green and Western Kentucky with all three being played since the 2019 season. The Hilltoppers have tallied wins in both contests, winning one in Bowling Green, Ky. and one in Bowling Green, Ohio. This will be the first neutral site match between the two teams that call Bowling Green home.
Watch Party
Bowling Green State University will be hosting a watch party at the Stroh Center on Thursday (Dec. 1). Doors will open at 4 p.m. with the match beginning at 4:30 p.m. The watch party will be free and open to the public. The first 200 fans inside the arena will receive popcorn.
The Battle Of Bowling Green: Part II
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will take on the Falcons for the second time this season after WKU received an At-Large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Hilltoppers fell short in their conference championship to Rice in five sets. The fourth set went to 28 points with a 28-26 score in favor of Rice before The Owls took the fifth set with a 15-11 score. The At-Large bid grants WKU their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their eighth appearance in the last nine seasons. Western Kentucky has advanced to the second round in each of their last four appearances.
Western Kentucky enters ranked No. 22 in the nation according to the AVCA Coaches poll and are led by a powerful combination on the attack. Lauren Matthews leads the way with 448 kills while Paige Briggs has 396. On the defensive end, Abby Schaefer paces the team with 308 digs with Briggs (252) and Ashley Hood (231) close behind. As for blocks, Katie Isenbarger tops the stat sheet with 124 while Matthews has 114.
Falcons In The NCAA Tournament
The Bowling Green Falcons earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history and the second time in the last three seasons. The last trip to the tournament for the Falcons came during the 2020-21 season, facing Weber State in the first round, falling 3-1. In 2012, BGSU tallied the program's lone NCAA win, topping Yale in five sets before going against No. 1 Penn State in the second round. Bowling Green's first NCAA appearance came in 1991, facing Wisconsin in the first round.
Hovey's Impressive Freshman Campaign
Lauryn Hovey was named the MVP of the MAC Tournament, adding to a long list of season accolades for the freshman. In the championship match, Hovey registered 22 kills, marking the first 20-kill match of the season for BGSU. She added 16 assists and 11 digs for her third triple-double of the season. Hovey is one of just 10 players in the nation with three or more triple-doubles and one of two freshmen among those 10. She's collected the MAC Freshman of the Year recognition, All-MAC First Team and MAC All-Freshman honors.
300-Kill Club
For the fourth consecutive season, the Falcons have two players on the roster with 300+ kills. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Petra Indrova leads the team with 322 kills with Lauryn Hovey close behind with 315. During the 2021 season, it was Indrova and Katelyn Meyer north of the 300 mark with 458 and 378, respectively, at the end of the season. Indrova and Meyer hit the mark in 2020 as well, seeing Meyer finish with 336 and 311. As for 2019, Meyer led the way with 459 while Jacqueline Askin tallied 323.

Petra Indrova leads the Falcons in kills with 322 and is second on the team in digs with 327. Indrova is the first BGSU player since 2012 to have 300+ kills and 300+ digs in the same season. The last to do so was Paige Penrod in 2012, ending the season with 491 kills and 393 digs. This is also the first time since the 2019 season that BGSU has had two players with 300+ digs. In addition to Indrova, Yelianiz Torres has 570 digs. In 2019, Julia Walz tallied 677 while Isabelle Marciniak added 305.
Torres Moving Up Record Book
Yelianiz Torres is currently eighth all-time for digs in a single season with a mark of 570 this year. Torres needs just two to surpass Julia Walz's 571 from last season for seventh all-time. Torres has continued a trend during Coach Tomic's tenure at Bowling Green. Each season during the Tomic Era, the Falcons have added a name to the program's Top 10 list for single season digs. Over the last seven matches, Torres has registered 33 or more digs three times, averaging 6.19 digs per set during that stretch with a total of 167 digs over 27 sets.
