Falcons Drop Friday Night Tilt To Top-Ranked Mavericks

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons (13-11-3, 10-8-1-2) battled the No. 1 Minnesota State Mavericks (26-5-0, 18-3-0-1) on Friday (Feb. 4) in Slater Family Ice Arena, with the Mavericks coming away with a 3-1 victory. The Mavericks scored an early first period goal, then added a power play goal in the second. A Nathan Burke score brought the Falcons within one in the third period, but MSU clinched the game with an empty net goal.

"We did a lot of good things. At the end of the day, it wa a good hockey game. Our guys woke up from the first period and played, for the most part, really well. Unfortunately, you can't take a period off in college hockey, especially against the number one team in the country."

Scoring Plays
- The Mavericks were on the board first, with Andy Carroll finding the back of the net after a nifty move through the offensive zone. Assists were credited to Julian Napravnik and Cade Borchardt.
- Midway through the second period, MSU scored a power play goal. Toledo native Brendan Furry snuck in a shot from the left side, with assists going to Napravnik and McNeely.
- With just over five minutes left in regulation, Austen Swankler won a faceoff in the BGSU zone. Gabriel Chicoine secured it and made a cross-ice pass to Nathan Burke. Burke connected on his shot, lighting the lamp and cutting the deficit to one.
- Minnesota State scored a late empty net goal to ice the game. After a flurry of Falcon shots, Borchardt obtained the puck and fed it to an open Furry, who scored his second goal of the night.
- Nathan Burke scored his team-best 14th goal of the night, giving him 20 points on the season. The Hobey Baker candidate has 27 goals and 48 points in his collegiate career.
- Austen Swankler tallied his 17th assist of the year, tying Taylor Schneider for the team lead. The forwards each have 25 points this season, the most on the team.
- Gabriel Chicoine notched his 16th assist of the year, the most among defensemen on the Falcons. The senior has 17 points on the season and 72 in his collegiate career. 60 of his points have been assists.
- Christian Stoever spent 59:12 in net and made 22 saves.
