BGSU slated to play four games at Lady Bison Classic
THIS WEEK IN FALCON SOFTBALL
• Lady Bison Classic • March 11-13 • Nashville, Tenn. •
• The BGSU softball team heads to Nashville to participate in this weekend's Lady Bison Classic, hosted by Lipscomb. In addition to the Falcons and the host school, the tourney field also includes Houston Baptist and Pittsburgh. All games will be held at Draper Diamond.
• A single-camera video feed is scheduled to be available for all of this weekend's action, with live stats available as well.
• Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons are 9-4 on the season, after going 3-1 at last weekend's UE Invitational in Evansville, Ind. The Falcons won the last three games of that tournament by a combined 22-3 score.
• Payton Gottshall was nothing short of dominant in Evansville. After throwing a four-hitter against Creighton, she had a perfect game in a run-rule win over Green Bay. In the latter contest, Gottshall faced 15 batters, and struck out all 15.
• Gottshall now has authored two of the three perfect games in program history.
• For good measure, she fired four no-hit innings vs. Evansville in her next outing, before that game was called due to rain and lightning.
• On the weekend, Gottshall was officially 2-0 with an ERA of 0.58 and an opponent batting average of just .103. The stats from the UE game do not count, but unofficially, Gottshall had an ERA of just 0.44 and a miniscule OBA of .080 on the weekend.
• BGSU has completed three weekends of action this season, and Gottshall has earned MAC Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades twice in 2022. Her latest honor came on Tuesday (March 8)
• At the plate, sophomore Peyton Dolejs and junior Greta L'Esperance are batting .400 and .341, respectively, on the season. Dolejs leads the team with 16 hits, six extra-base knocks and 15 RBI. L'Esperance has team-leading totals of eight stolen bases and 15 runs scored.
• Sophomore Reagan Williamson is hitting .308 and leads the Orange and Brown with four homers, while freshman Bailey Sample is batting .286.
• Dolejs has six multiple-hit games and Williamson five. Both players have had four multi-RBI contests. Dolejs has 15 RBI after driving in 10 runs last spring.
• Williamson homered in three of the four games during the NC State Invitational. Last season, she had two hits (both singles) and two RBI in 26 at-bats. This year, in 39 at-bats, Williamson has four homers and 13 RBI.
• L'Esperance has had at least one hit in 11 of the Falcons' 13 games to date.
• In her first collegiate start, freshman Wynnie Reid went 2-for-2 with a double, a sac fly and a run scored vs. Green Bay. The next day, Madison Hendrix had her first hit as a Falcon, and it proved to be a big one. Hendrix clubbed a three-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the win over Morehead State.
• Gottshall leads the BGSU pitching corps with a 5-2 record, an ERA of 1.74 and 77 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings. Hannah Davies is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.63, while Kiara Hurley is also 2-1 with three saves and an ERA of 4.55. Hurley's save total is the highest by a BGSU player in four years.
• Gottshall leads the MAC in five statistical categories, and is fourth in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (12.2), 15th in shutouts and 23rd in overall strikeouts.
• Gottshall struck out a school-record 282 batters last season, and obliterated the BGSU record for strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 9.79 (the old record was 8.46). Gottshall went 20-12 last spring, becoming just the fourth pitcher in school history, and the first since 1995, to win 20 games in a season.
• In just her third year with the Falcons (including a shortened 2020 season), Gottshall already has added her name to numerous BGSU career lists, including strikeouts per seven innings (10.24, first), winning pct. (.655 [36-19], fourth), strikeouts (487, fifth), earned-run average (1.87, eighth), shutouts (14, ninth), wins (36, 10th) and complete games (39, 10th).
• With two more stolen bases last weekend, L'Esperance now has 37 in her BGSU career, and has moved into a tie for eighth place on that list. She has a career batting average of .348, good for fourth on the BGSU chart.
• Willis and assistant coaches Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and Michaela Bauer welcomed back a total of 16 letterwinners, including six positional starters, from last year's team. Additionally, four of the five pitchers who saw action last season returned, and that quartet combined to pitch 98% of the team's innings a year ago. The returnees also combined for 100% of the Falcons' wins.
• BGSU ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 27-27, and the Falcons went 19-20 in Mid-American Conference action. BG, picked to finish eighth in the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll, ended the season in fifth place in the 11-team league. BGSU was one of two conference teams to finish as many as three places higher than predicted.
• The Falcons finished with the program's highest winning percentage in MAC play since 2012, and BGSU's overall total of 27 wins was the highest since the 2013 campaign.
• This season, BGSU was picked to place fourth in the MAC, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
• Houston Baptist is 9-8 on the young season, while Pittsburgh is 9-7 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Panthers are coming off of a win over No. 3 Florida State. Lipscomb is 7-12, but riding a three-game winning streak.
• BGSU has gone 1-1 all-time vs. Pittsburgh, and the Falcons are 1-4 against Lipscomb. BG has never met Houston Baptist on the diamond.
• Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will prepare for the home and the MAC opener. BGSU meets Northern Illinois next weekend at Meserve Field, with a Friday (March 18) game followed by a Saturday doubleheader (March 19).
